This could have been a very decent hidden object game, sadly it has bugged achievements and a long winded rabbit-hole-within-a-rabbit-hole story layout. We, as the players, are set out to uncover the mysteries of the Salem trials and the death of Nathaniel Hawthorne. The HOG segments are good enough, sometimes the objects have dodgy description is all. Atmosphere/settings are charming enough. The game decides to throw the player around between dimensions/timelines and it's done in such a way that it got me disoriented at times. The puzzles are fairly easy, if not we get a lot of hints/ the option to skip anyways. For the bugged achievements there's players complaining about it as far as 2014 and the devs never did anything about it, there's a workaround but that implies that if someone cares about having achievements then they should tamper with the game files. Fortunately, this game doesn't overstay its welcome as it's quite short and doesn't have much replay value unless you missed some achievements/ want to try the alternate play modes. I won it for free, otherwise I can't recommend it unless you manage to get it in a sale/bundle or for free for the issues that it has.

Great visuals and soundtrack BUT ! None of your achievements gets recorded on Steam . Apparently a lot of people already complained about it ( as far as 2014) but it seems they never fixed the problem.

I had a blast with this game. Usually h.o. don't have much (if any) story, but this is actually coherent. There are different puzzles and it felt like a game instead of an asset flip. It does, have 2 large cons. #1: For the achievements to work, you will need to load the game under the -achievements (beta) version. And rename the .exe file to MidnightMysteriesSalemWitchTrials.exe. It's VERY slow compared to the public version, but it's the only one that works for achievements! #2: If you enjoy getting full achievements and/or easter eggs (both of which matter to me!) I suggest you use the Bigfishgames walkthrough (https://www.bigfishgames.com/blog/walkthroughs/midnight-mysteries-the-salem-witch-trials.html), even though they don't mention Easter Eggs. At all. Ctrl + f and typing in the item it's with will make finding each easter egg items much, much faster. Aside from that, the game rocks. I played it 6 times. In a row. I was determined, fam. One way or another I was getting my goshdarn achievements. No egg left behind!🤧 Here's a guide on how to get the easter eggs: There are 6 items for easter eggs. 5 items are found, 4 of these combine to make different things, leading to 2 new h.o. scenes. After solving them you then get 2 different awards in game and as Steam Achievements. Yes, the achievements work, I just did them (all) myself. But back to the Easter Egg hunt: 1st is a Pocket Watch, and it's at the Judge's office/Courtroom. The same hidden object scene in which you get the Gavel Head. 2nd is a Slipper (looks like a red heeled shoe) and it's at the construction site. Can't miss it, under the tree. After Abigail's trial, you'll follow Mary's ghost (after also picking up the Rag Doll). She takes you to the construction site automatically. 3rd is a Rabbit in the h.o. scene in Philip English's house. 4th is Alice (it's a portrait). It's on the second level, room on the left, of the House of Seven Gables/Hepzibah's home. (The one with the Piano Key puzzle in it.) 5th is the 2nd Slipper. In the first chest in Sarah Good's House. (After you get the Silver Ribbon, and at the same time you get the Silver Olive Branch.) I would suggest joining and solving the easter eggs after getting the 5th item. Combine: Slipper + Slipper, Pocket Watch + Rabbit (which gives you a Rabbit Hole), Rabbit Hole + Alice.
