Midnight Driver

Was really excited when I picked this up. I love Initial D so the chance of replicating the races I got to watch in the anime was really appealing to me. So I bought this, retrieved my Initial D sountrack playlist and started playing. First race was against no one, with no requirements on what time I had to beat to win, nothing. I thought maybe it was against online leader boards but no leader board ever loaded except one showing only my account. Didn't think much of it and unlocked the second event named race expecting racing an AI driver. Nope, exactly the same, just drive around a track on your own, no goals, no time limits no nothing. OK, so maybe it's multiplayer focused? Well maybe that was the idea, only no one is playing this online. So at the end of the day you get what basically is a demo or a proof of concept. No AI, no different events, no actual competition, and you can unlock everything in probably less of an hour. And the maddening part is that it would be so easy to at least put a time limit you had to beat or keep track of the times other people around the world got and try to compete with them. Nope, nothing. So for the first time I asked for a refund. Even at a discount the game has too little to offer to actually recommend to anyone. Just find the Initial D games from the PS2 and PS3 and play those instead on an emulator.

Edit: Well, I really tried to like this game but I've refunded it. This game is obviously meant for Initial D fans, and it really does sell the joy of drifting down/up mountains... my only concern is that it feels unfinished. The UI could use a lot of polish, the car handling is fine but there's the occasional weird physics issue like when I glue to a hill off-road. This game could really benefit from a bunch of little tweaks and improvements, but it seems like the developer might've just moved on from this game since there's no sign of any issues being addressed anytime soon. I would love to revisit this game when it's in a more finished state, especially since I am a fan of the anime and this feels like a great start to an Initial D fangame, I just can't recommend it in the state it's in unless you're the type of player who loves to replay tracks to improve your time. As of now, that's all the replayability the game offers. If this game gets updated then I'll gladly revise my review to reflect the changes.

If you want an Initial D-esque (in physics) arcade driving game, this is great. But given the state of multiplayer, I think there should be an AI or NPC race option (you could be able to select their vehicle or select that they get a random vehicle, per se). Also, I think that when you down shift, the car's wheel speed should change in order to accurately accompany that downshift, bringing you closer in to the turn. I feel like at least a few customization options should be in place; like color, body options, rims and tires, how low the car is, how cambered or toed the wheels are, maybe some custom headlights or taillights. Of course, there should be a way to save these changes into a simple save slot that can be accessed by a "load custom version of this car" side menu possibly. Another thing that could be added, though it would be a hassle, is a custom map maker. An interior camera would also be great, but I know that takes creating an accurate (as well as accurate to the art style) interior for each car. I would also love an Acura Integra-esque car (both USDM and JDM front ends), a Supra, and maybe a few other cars would be nice to add in for variety sake. Those are all my suggestions, but I think the game is pretty good for what it is. Fun to drive while listening to music.

Driving controls feel awkward and imprecise, which makes handling the vehicle frustrating rather than enjoyable. The city environment itself lacks detail and atmosphere, making it hard to feel immersed in the intended eerie setting. The sound design does little to enhance the tension, often feeling flat and uninspired. While the game tries to build a mood of suspense, it falls short of creating a compelling or engaging experience. The pacing drags, and without meaningful challenges or surprises, it becomes difficult to stay invested. Why I Don’t Recommend Midnight Driver If you’re after a thrilling or polished driving game, Midnight Driver isn’t likely to meet your expectations. Its repetitive tasks, clunky controls, and uninspired presentation make it hard to recommend over other driving or suspense titles. Unless you’re curious to try something experimental, there are better options out there for a satisfying driving experience.
