About
Miasmata is a first-person survival/adventure game, developed from the ground-up by brothers Joe and Bob Johnson. You play as Robert Hughes, a plague-stricken scientist on a journey to discover a cure. Your adventure begins on the shores of a remote and mysterious island. Long ago, the island was inhabited by a group of indigenous people, whose extant monuments still decorate the island landscape. The island is now home to a scientific research outpost and it is your hope to reunite with your colleagues working there. Unfortunately, you'll soon discover that something has gone terribly wrong.
During your adventure, you will encounter a mysterious and deadly creature. This creature can stalk you for miles, lurking behind grasses and vegetative cover. By treading carefully and with stealth, you may be able to elude the creature. If you are careless, however, you will be forced to confront the creature head-on.

I can't even beat the game. It just randomly crashes when I try to use the canteen, refill canteen, try to science, falling off of cliffs, getting raked by kitty, picking up components of the cure, and applying the cure. After several attempts though I was able to reach the boat but it ends up crashing there too.
There was so much potential, but... It's about survival, but you don't need to build, eat, sleep, and can't defend. It's about exploration, but you can't find sh*t without walking along a road. It's about herbalism, but with the depth of hack'n'slash game. It's like being in Kilimanjaro, but you can't go against 15 degree slope. It's like having GTA SA map size, but you only can run as fast as CJ crouching. It's like playing ARMA3, but much less eventful per unit of time.

I love this game! Crawling through dense jungle - synthesizing meds, all while avoiding a mysterious threat - had an absolute whale of a time - I will say that this game kind of wore out its welcome when it came to the rainbow orchid, but other than that I loved everything about this experience.
I give this game a rank C (60-65%) Okay game - not bad but you can skip it or try on sale. See my profile for more details about my reviews. Miasmata is a really intriguing game, with some unique ideas that could have been very interesting to play. Unfortunately the whole experience is repetitive and clunky, the graphics are really not engaging, and the overall atmosphere is too low budget/amateur to keep me on my toes. It is definitely not bad, the concept on paper could for sure interest and entertain some players and some devs looking for different ideas about investigation, puzzle solving and exploration. But as a player in 2025, there is just no reason for me to spend more time on this. This is a 62%, it's okay but completely skipable - only look into it if you are intrigued by the concept or in search of new ideas!
This game left me absolutely torn. I was obsessed with it when I started and still really enjoyed it in the middle. By the end though I was definitely ready for it to be over. The graphics are ok but where this game really shines is in its story. This game has the layers of an onion in its storytelling. On the other hand, the worst part of the game is the movement. Having realistic momentum is an interesting idea. Unfortunately I would not categorize the movement in this game as real. Your character feels like they are running around this island on top of a ball. Even from a running start, real people can stop much quicker than this game gives them credit for. This can lead to some very frustrating moments. I would say the movement in this game is more of a threat than the actual monster. . . Still I am proud of myself for beating this because it is a challenging game. It's an immersive sim on an island where you have to find the cure. Its more immersive in my opinion than Green Hell in some ways. Less hand holding in the exploration department that's for sure. I'd give this game a 7.5 out of 10.
Many years have passed since I played it, hopefully I forgot the map and can replay one day, waiting for this with anticipation. One of the best game like ever. It is about making the map and some horror element that try to prevent you from doing it, but it is more about atmosphere. Didn't find anything like it.
