(Played on the Enhanced Edition, which doesn't have a separate Steam page for some reason) Coming off the back of Last Light, I went into this one expecting more of the same tunnels and cramped corridors, and instead got something completely different in the best way. This time Artyom and the crew leave Moscow behind entirely and cross the country aboard a train called the Aurora, which doubles as your home base between chapters, and the game opens up into semi open locations for the first time in the series. You get a snowy stretch along the Volga, a sun scorched Caspian Sea, and the Taiga, which turned into one of my favorite levels in any game from this series, rewarding quiet, careful play and picking off patrols with a crossbow instead of guns blazing. It has this atmosphere that's hard to put into words, calm and dangerous at the same time. The open world mechanics can get a little annoying at points, mainly when you're stuck figuring out where to go next, but it's manageable and never actually ruins the experience. What really stuck with me is that the story and the characters here are just as strong as they were in Last Light, maybe even more so, just in a different way. Your crew starts feeling less like companions who follow you around and more like an actual family you've grown attached to, and the downtime scenes on the train, where everyone just talks and interacts with each other, are some of the best moments in the whole game. It genuinely feels like real people reacting to a broken world instead of scripted NPCs waiting for their next line, and the good ending hit just as hard as I hoped it would, earned rather than handed to you. The story DLCs add a nice bit of lore on top of this too. Two Colonels stood out to me, set a year before the main story in the Novosibirsk metro with that same tense, closed in feeling the first two games had, while Sam's Story runs longer and takes things in a different direction, and even if it doesn't quite match that same atmosphere, it's still worth going through for more time with these characters. Visually this is easily the best looking Metro out there, and it's not just about resolution or texture detail, it's how alive every location feels because of the weather and lighting shifting around you as you travel, a sandstorm over the Caspian, sunlight through the trees in the Taiga, a snowstorm along the Volga, all of it changing how a level plays and not just how it looks. Crafting also got added into the mix this time around, so you're constantly picking apart scrap to make ammo, molotovs, or filters on the fly using your backpack, fitting the survival tone of the series without turning it into a full blown RPG with skill trees and stat sheets. If I have one real disappointment, it's that the Dark Ones basically get dropped from the story entirely, showing up as little more than an easter egg after how central they were to the first two games and how tied the good ending in Last Light was to them. The ghost visions are gone too, and their absence is noticeable if you came in expecting that same eerie touch woven into the exploration. A few other things hold it back from being perfect: boat sections are a genuine low point, since Artyom moves painfully slowly and can't even use a weapon while rowing, and the Taiga chapter front loads most of the side content, so the back half feels noticeably more linear again. I also ran into a handful of crashes along the way, which caught me off guard since none of the older games ever gave me that problem. None of that takes away from the overall package though. Between the crossbow focused stealth in the Taiga, the family like bond with your crew, an ending that actually earns its emotional weight, and a world that feels genuinely alive through its weather and lighting, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition stands right alongside Last Light as one of the best in the series, just built around a completely different kind of freedom.
