Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

MapleStory is an Asian fantasy MMO. There are 40 distinct classes with thousands of unique cosmetic options so lots of customizations are possible. Some items are outlandishly expensive which is par for the course in most MMO games I have played. This game has been on Steam for almost 15 years now and the player base is surprisingly stable. The 2D graphics are why the game scales readily. The 9600 GT has a measly 64 CUDA cores so integrated graphics like the Kaby Lake UHD 630 should be fine. Played this on my Dell Precision 3480 with Arc Xe graphics and RTX A500 discrete graphics. Game is very playable.
Go play a private server where your time and effort is respected. Everything in this game is designed to push you towards microtransactions. I say this as someone who probably spent thousands of hours playing this in the late 2000s.

Ever since the release of item potential in mid-2010, Nexon has made MapleStory into nothing but a soulless p2w cash-grab. Yes, you can argue some p2w elements came out earlier, but item potential is the big one, and the last straw personally. I'm writing this review because MapleStory Classic is coming out next month. I was initially hyped, but I feel like this region got the worst treatment out of the other regions (excluding China, possibly). The need for two open beta tests that were easily farmed by people exploiting the system instead of giving them to people who genuinely played old school Maple and were passionate about the game back then. The "founders package" fiasco where you can pay for up to 2 weeks of early access but only if you buy one of the $60+ packages and NOT the $30 one. It doesn't even give you any NX to use, just some questionable-looking cosmetics. Now they're doing a Frieren collab with Classic BEFORE the game comes out, and you can't even roll the outfit boxes you get until after the game gets released and you complete the tutorial island. You can't buy the boxes after the October 7th release, 1 day after Early Access launch, and you can't even redeem the boxes until October 23rd, 2 days after the game is open to the public. The game's not even out yet and they're already heavily monetizing it and adding premature cosmetic gambling. I know it's unfair to write with regards to a game before it even comes out, but given Nexon's legal history (look up the 11-year cube rate fiasco and last year's MapleStory IDLE fiasco) and the heavy monetization they're doing both on GMS and what they're doing so far with MSC, I am not very hopeful for Maplestory Classic. I'm also willing to bet there's going to be unscheduled maintenance after unscheduled maintenance for both Founders Access and public release because that's how this game rolls. It sucks too, I genuinely want MSC to be successful, but you know the saying, fool me once...
It would be irresponsible to ever recommend this game to a new player. Skip it.
Downloaded the game years ago and created a character, then never touched it after that. Tried it again this year just to see that im banned. Nice.
Just received the email for those founders packs. You must be absolutely out of your mind Nexon.
After more than 2500+ Hrs on Steam and about 3000 in total , returning from Pre BB Aran Evan Dualblade Era ... loved it for most part but the grind is real and its more of a money sucking monster than a grind for fun to play , Passses Passes and more Passes , from Event to Event ... Mule story , Daily Story , Grind story ... no Quests , no Content that is for Groups whatsoever , Maps becomes more and more like pictures on Big World map instead of Traveling though them , to sum it up this is a P2W game ... without it you just get tired out ... im Out for now hopefully Classic may change
This game is like that really easy girl in middle school. You played with her for a while and got bored with her, but you hear her call your name and for whatever reason you go back to see if anything has changed, and every time you go back, nothing has ever changed. Now, almost 8 years since you've met her, and you two still meet up every once and awhile to diddle. This game, man.
8 hour "minor maintenance" about every week. for a 20 year old game. absolutely unsatisfactory patch roll outs riddled with bugs. ZERO communication. no fair compensation. do not play this game
This used to be one of my favourite games. I spent many many hours enjoying the grind. I decided to pick it back up as I'm taking a break from a couple other games, and highly regret doing so. This game has gone downhill more than I thought possible. Right away at the character creation screen you have too many options for class, making it impossible to pick one without reading descriptions for a long period of time. Next you load into the game, and it tries to get you to auto level to job advancement, and you can't even roam around freely killing snails like the good old days. Instead of getting to enjoy every level up while doing quest and grinding, you now follow a basic questline that is 90% cutscenes. It skips like 10 levels at a time, even without making a burning character which levels way faster. If you loved the old Maplestory, do yourself a favour and don't play it now. Remember the good times and find a different game to enjoy now.
