Hey, you. Yes you, reading these reviews. Play this game already, don't ask questions. Just shut up and do it.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love this game. i picked it up and couldn't put it back down. the art is gorgeous with some seriously creative monster designs, and the overall experience of exploring the apartment, unlocking new areas and discovering the secrets in each dungeon, was so fun and absorbing. i recommend going into this as blind as possible.
Amazing art, story, dialogue, writing, insane soundtrack, and easily the best depiction of cosmic horror i've ever seen in any form of media. 10/10 would look outside again
Yep! I’m one of the jerks who doesn’t think this game is worth the hype. It's a shame, too, because this game has a lot going for it. The bizarre, but frightening concept, leaves you alone in an apartment building trying to navigate a disturbing and changing world around you. The game combines cutesy elements of an Earthbound-like RPG, along with vile body horror ala John Carpenter's the Thing. Along the way, you come across numerous characters and monsters that are either forsaken or possibly salvable with your intervention. This game is not afraid to throw tough moral choices your way, and some experiences are truly scarring and disturbed. It's easy to see why it resonates with so many people. It's a real drag, because it felt like it was right up my alley. I’m used to difficult survival horror games (i.e. Darkwood, Visage, Lone Survivor, Alien Isolation), but the difficulty spikes in this game are too imbalanced or ill-planned to make it worth completing. In my playthrough, I have found myself "soft-locked" with little resources and no power in my building. If I want to get the power back on and actually continue exploring any new area, I have to go through two tough bosses (Olm and Electrophage), and whatever other difficult creatures and hazards between them that are going to try and kill me as well. I'm leaving the comments on this review, so feel free to tell me to get gud, or that I have a skill issue--However, I’m currently playing this game along with Resident Evil 9, and am kind of amazed at how much better that game is at balancing difficult gameplay while not making you feel completely helpless. Both games punish you hard if you make a mistake, but I am at least able to learn from them in RE9. In Look Outside, I don't even know where I've gone wrong. Either I've invested too much in a dungeon I didn't need to explore, or spent too much on items I didn't need, and after 15 hours of playtime, I don't feel willing to suffer anymore of this game's strange indignation as to why. I've read some forum posts that contend that the game needs to be played multiple times to be enjoyable. If you had the fun and patience for this game, I'm glad, but holy hell, I can't imagine the need to self flagellate myself anymore than I need to for this. I'm happy this game has an audience, but this game is a hard pass for me.
My review will mean nothing and nobody will ever look at it. BUT, this is truly a wonderful game, the combat feels good and is fun, the encounters are always tough enough to make you have to actually apply strategy, the art is absolutely astounding. The interactions you get between characters is fun and lets you better understand them. Multiple playthroughs are warranted due to different party members you can get and builds. Overall, 10/10
Exploring is fun. Finding party members is fun. Collecting items is fun. Beating bosses is fun. Leveling up is fun. Dying and losing almost an hour of progress due to a terribly designed map is really really really really really really really really really really really really really not fun. "It's supposed to be hard!!!" is not and never will be an excuse for bad game design. Give the player a limited use flashbang to automatically escape a fight, or an item to teleport home that needs to recharge, and I would have been much more forgiving with this review, but Look Outside absolutely does not respect the player's time, and even sets them up to fail because it's "le hard unforgiving game xXXDD" in the most crude and insulting way possible. It's a waste of time and a waste of a concept.
