I've adored the Little Nightmares series for years; the amount of hype I felt when the game was initially announced in August 2023 was immeasurable, especially after the previous entry, Little Nightmares 2, which proved itself to be absolutely phenomenal. With the delays that eventually followed, I was never upset or disappointed, as surely the delays would only ensure the best for the next entry in the series. This was the first game I've ever pre-ordered a collector's edition for; it broke my heart how much this game failed to capture the original identity of its predecessors that made them such incredible experiences for so many people. To me, the fault lies completely with Supermassive Games, as the original studio, Tarsier, created the other two installments. I really hope when I get the opportunity to play through Tarsier's new original, REANIMAL, it will reassure me that Supermassive Games was really the reason behind this entry falling flat.
One of the few games that have actually made me cry, the little nightmares series is by far unmatched in horror puzzle games.
WELCOME TO LITTLE NIGHTMARES (OF TRIAL AND ERROR). Controls and gameplay feel clunky, yet it constantly expects you to be precise, 100%, all the time. Being chased is probably the worst part. The game expects you to immediately know exactly where to go and what to interact with, or where to hide and there's barely any time to look. Oh, you didn't notice this box here? You're dead. Oh, you hit the wrong part of the glass? Oopsie, you're dead. Rather than reacting to a tense, and scary situation, you're just gonna start feeling like you're playing a trial and error memorisation. Controls and visual cues don't even support it. A lot of 'HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT THE FIRST TIME?'. We have to die first to figure things out. Finishing it felt more like a relief that it was over than a satisfaction.
I can't recommend this game. Its clunky, buggy and agonizing to play. The camera cant be bothered to show you what you need to see or where to go, so you're jumping into the emptiness, praying you land somewhere alive (you wont). The platforming is off, causing lots of deaths, which become 20 minutes of rewatching the same cutscenes over and over again. I loved the originals, they played well and the controls weren't painful. This game however, has objects that bug out, puzzles with no meaning, and confusing objectives. The story is okay for what its worth, but going through the game itself is just too frustrating to justify the purchase. If they make another game, I hope it can perform better.
Visually, it’s stunning; the atmosphere remains true to the series but is more varied and detailed than ever. Every setting tells a story, and the art direction pushes the surreal nightmare aesthetic even further. The issue is that you don’t understand anything or perhaps you try not to. Let me reiterate: this isn’t a horror game. It isn’t designed to scare; that isn’t its goal. The franchise aims for something else entirely; it’s a unique style. You shouldn’t compare it to *Reanimal*; they are two completely different games, each with its own distinct atmosphere. Many people criticized this game simply because they expected it to be like *Reanimal*. But the truth is... they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. *Reanimal* clearly targets pure horror and dread, whereas *Little Nightmares* focuses more on atmosphere, staging, and symbolism rather than direct scares.
Having played Little Nightmares I and II, I found the third installment to be a bit of a letdown in terms of its trial-and-error game design. As you progress, the bosses become significantly tougher, and beating them gets frustratingly difficult due to how precise your timing needs to be. The slightest mistake or delayed input results in instant failure, forcing you to restart from the last checkpoint. This constantly breaks the flow, taking away the fun and turning the experience into a chore. Having played the game with a friend, if one of us succeeded but the other failed a precise input, the game would keep restarting us from the last checkpoint. This creates frustration between players. I have patience for the person I play with, but not everyone will have a good time because of this. When I compare Little Nightmares III to REANIMAL, the contrast in level design, combat, and AI is night and day. REANIMAL feels much more organic, relying on the player's natural instincts rather than demanding pixel-perfect positioning to avoid danger. Little Nightmares III, on the other hand, strictly punishes you if you aren't standing in the exact spot the developers intended. My honest verdict: Little Nightmares III certainly had potential, but passing the torch away from Tarsier Studios clearly cost the game its soul. It's not a complete failure, so I’d give it a 6.5/10 for the effort, but it pales in comparison to the first two masterpieces and REANIMAL.
Disregarding the bugs, I think this is my favorite game in the franchise. I'm not sure if I played the same game as other reviewers, but this was outstanding. The puzzles were well designed, fun, and took my friend and I a little sometimes but we managed to think it through and work past it all. The amount of split second decisions and in the moment thinking we had to do really made the game all that much better. The ending alone makes me horrendously sad, but that paired with the post credits scene and the achievement you get at the end of the game just breaks my heart to pieces. Despite my need to cry afterwards, it was wonderfully done. I hope we get another installment in the future, keep it up Supermassive! May we play LN together, and finally have a HAPPY ending next time. -From the Spiral
I bought multiple versions of this game for my wife & I to play on separate computers. I assumed it was going to be good & wanted to support them. Unfortunately, this was one of the most boring games we've ever played. The entire game consists of walking from one side of the room to the other. No real challenges or any puzzles. Just... walk over here and WOW the screen changes. Now walk over here. An enormous disappointment. Should have written this months ago but never got around to it. 3.6 hours played because I did my best to play through it. Honestly, I'd take a refund in a heartbeat. I feel cheated out of my money by the first two games having some substance.
Bought it for like $20. This game is so jank and buggy it pissed us off so much. We kept playing hoping that it would make it worth our while, and honestly the soundtrack and enemies didn't feel that special and were "meh". Thinking of playing Little Nightmares III? Go undust your ceiling fan or clean the bathtub. It would be worth way more of your time than this ♥♥♥♥.
