What a shame, truly a pile of shame this is. Such a cool arthouse experience, but that poor old Ren'py, clearly not made for all of it, not sure if it's the size of the images or the constant animation, the game feels like it's running under the water, I never seen that with a visual novel, how in the world did you bottleneck a visual novel. You need to find a different engine, this one can't keep up with what you doing. Unless it is image size, I mean the game is 5 gigs, are they too big maybe, or are you spamming animations too often. Otherwise it's a pretty cool visual experience if you into excessive arthouse vibes, the characters don't look that unique, but it's really all the psychotic videos and some of the animations, I have seen a similar direction before but not in this medium specifically. I could attempt to say something about this nonsense of a narrative but I have not a slightest idea of what I read, I was mostly along for the vibes anyway. You can usually tell the quality/effort of a visual novel by how often the characters and the backgrounds are animated, and this game felt like 4x times the effort of most games, there were a lot of videos and short animations, so in that sense you have made a really good game, at least on the surface level. That said, I didn't care too much for the story, the game was very laggy, and as far as I can tell it was linear, one and done kind of ride. 60 minutes or so, check out the extras in the gallery as well. And the music lol, I almost find it insulting that the game is trying to hurt my ears at every chance it gets, bold choice though, feels like one of those birthday cards when they get wet. Honestly I kinda like it, just a bit strange to listen to it the entire time.
Pros:
(+) The game looked unusual in the trailer, but I didn't expect so many arthouse videos, very unusual for the medium. There were a lot of small animations, certainly more than your average visual novel. (+) Music, well, maybe a little painful, kinda going for white noise and static, cool vibes though, somewhat fun characters.
Feedback:
- Yea the ren'py clearly can't handle so much at the same time, the game is laggy, that is the only thing that really holds you back - Some choices would have been nice, the game also ends somewhat abruptly I feel Overall Thoughts: 6/10 (8/10 if it didn't run like a snail) Clearly very high effort visual novel, as short as it is, lots of cool videos, lots of cool animations and some unusual designs. It's just laggy and not very fun to read because of it, you may want to consider porting it into something else, or switching into another engine if you plan on making more games like this. Big eye candy, so laggy though, ouch.
Niche, obscure and underrated games: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
Fantastic visual novel, I loved it. The art, aesthetics and character designs are all top notch, I've seen tons of visual novels and I don't remember any that impressed me as much as this one. You can also clearly see how much effort and love was put into it, as there are so many CGs and backgrounds (especially for a short VN, and they are all so good, I took way too many screenshots) as well as tons of little animations and weird visual effects that make it a very stylish, "trippy" and unforgettable experience. The story is great too, with cool characters (Scorial is such a lovable scoundrel) and a fascinating bizarre world that, while may appear so weird and nonsensical at first, has its own logic and rules that get a proper explanation (and a satisfying conclusion) by the end of the game. It took me 3 hours to reach the end (though I'm a kinda fast reader, so it may be longer for you), it's a kinetic novel so there are no choices nor different endings. Personally I didn't have notable performance issues (even without using the trick suggested by the developer), just very few hiccups every now and then that didn't impact my experience.
Overflowing with imagination and hard to describe vibes. From the writing to the art everything feels so laboriously curated. A real passion project that is tempered by having an actual story to tell. Instead of just throwing cool visuals around, everything in the game builds on what came before and there's a really well crafted narrative arc. Also the comedy really works and in fact informs the player about the characters, instead of the writer just trying to be funny.
Just played through the whole game of the recommendation of a friend and holy hell?!?!?!? What an absolute feverdream it was in the very best way!!! I very rarely play visual novels cause few really grip me but Lap of the Gods really did!!! The designs are so cool and well made! The story is captivating (if not a bit conusing at some points) but all in all really fantastic especially with how everything came together with the stylistic and artistic choices all around! Only negative thing is that it was a bit laggy at some points but otherwise I had an absolute fantastic time with this game and can only recommend it!!!
5-7的头是一个微型Black Star(一个吉他放大器和效果器的品牌)。
No Responsibility Review,
Lap of the Gods is one of the few Visual Novels I've played and actively enjoyed to the point that it's been plaguing my mind for at least 6 months since I first played the demo. The artstyle and the character designs drew me in but the story is what kept me playing. And i've been shilling it to everyone I know ever since lol Even if you don't fw object heads or kinetic VNs, I think this game still has a story that needs to be heard just like every other game out there. The world is interesting and the mystery behind the Chosen Ones is as heartbreaking as it is intriguing and the path to see each main characters' deeper meanings to themselves other than what the trailers or what the first act shows was a long but well-loved one. I'm happy for them and I'm sad for them. My gripes about this game, however, is that sometimes some character models are hidden when you hide the chat box and that idk how the 'skipping unseen text' option works unless I gotta be way into the game to see any texts I apparenlty didn't see lol The ending also felt kind of abrupt(?). I'm not sure if thats the right word but it feels that way to me. There has been a workaround since then but the game and demo stuttered and lagged before, I guess cause of all the animations, but runs pretty well on my PC. Lower end ones may struggle but theres settings for it now so you can try that if you get the same problem. Overall, I love this game. One of the Visual Novels of all time. You should try it out, it's only $8. Play it!
This game was stunning in every way possible! I am not usually a fan of visual novels but this one was so beautifully written and illustrated that I have no words to properly describe it!
i have never played a game that felt as beautiful as this one
Between the characters, the surreal atmosphere, and the crazy gorgeous art, this will be stuck in my head for a long time. I'll be revisiting this world just to look at the backgrounds again. note: some of the reviews at release mentioned performance issues. There've been updates since then and it ran smoothly for me, but you can test the demo and the fix in the description
