It is a great last ditch effort of having fun with friends because it's free and it actually has fun stupid gambs to play with friends.
Landfall Archives is a free collection of old Landfall projects that never properly got released. Instead of being one full game, you get 23 different prototypes, demos and experiments, including early versions of games like TABS and ROUNDS. The biggest strength is the amount of variety. You can go from shooting robots to building conveyor belts, fighting other players, controlling missiles or messing around with an old version of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. Because there are so many different projects, there is always something new to try. The TABS 2017 version is probably one of the most interesting parts. It gives you a look at how Totally Accurate Battle Simulator was being made before it became the game people know today. There are also prototypes for ROUNDS 3D and other games that give you a good idea of how Landfall experiments with its ideas. There are also multiplayer games included, such as Auction Brawl, Counts and Stakes and ROUNDS 3D. Some can be played locally while others have online multiplayer, so the collection is not completely focused on single player stuff. I also like that Landfall decided to actually release these projects instead of leaving them forgotten. A lot of them are rough and clearly unfinished, but that is part of the appeal. You are basically getting to look through a collection of weird ideas that normally would never have been released. The biggest problem is that the quality is very inconsistent. Some of the prototypes are genuinely fun, while others feel more like something you would play for five minutes just to see what it is. Since these were never meant to be full releases, you cannot expect every project to have much depth. A lot of the games are also quite short. Once you have tried the projects that interest you most, there is not necessarily a huge reason to keep coming back. The collection is more interesting as something to explore than as one game you will play for hundreds of hours. Overall, Landfall Archives is a really cool free collection for anyone who likes Landfall's games or enjoys seeing unfinished game ideas. The huge variety and completely free price make it easy to recommend, even though plenty of the individual projects are rough or unfinished. Rating: 7.7/10
