Disclaimer: I loved the demo of this game so much that I volunteered to beta test and proofread it. I was going to buy it anyway when it came out, though, so imo my review is not "biased" other than by the fact that I am indeed a fan of RPGs and narrative games. Joy Malignant is a short surreal narrative game with RPG elements. Its "dice based" mechanic is inspired by Citizen Sleeper, but it's not as fixed as that because the Masks have some randomness to them since they have higher or lower chances towards a positive, neutral, or negative outcome. There are multiple endings (two major ones plus your character's mosaic being different at the end based on your choices). It's a very philosophical leaning game, so if you enjoy that aspect of games like Disco Elysium or other narrative games, you'll probably also like this. My first playthrough took almost 2 hours to complete, though I expect for most players that will be around 2.5-3 hours because I'm just a very fast reader. There should be enough content here (in particular different choices you can make in quests) for about 2-4 playthroughs, which I think is very solid for a game with a base price of 9 dollars/euro. The story and worldbuilding are obviously the highlights of the game, and I'm so fascinated by the city of Visceria that I hope the dev will make another bigger RPG set in this city in the future. The city of Visceria is a place of suffering that was punished by a forgotten god to float above the rest of the world. . Its inhabitants are made to wear their sins and most prominent traits as pieces of mosaics that replace their regular appearance. That's where your character's mosaic that I mentioned earlier comes in. You're a Faceless, someone who doesn't have a mosaic at all, and who is treated with suspicion by the Church who controls the city. As you have no memories and no understanding of the world around you, you'll have to explore the city and uncover the secrets behind the Faceless and the city's suffering. Your choices in quests will determine the mosaic pieces that your character obtains - I think it's a very cool system, though obviously I think it would be even better in a longer game, so I hope it's something that's kept for a future game. I tend to ramble because ADHD so honestly if you want a more concise review you can just go on my YT channel cause I managed to condense everything into 10 minutes, lol. The bottom line is: if you enjoy narrative games that explore interesting themes about personhood and society, then this game is for you. Bonus: you get to support a solo dev so he can keep making games!

Don't ever buy no weed from no gas station bro In all seriousness, this game is truly a hidden gem from what I have played so far. Everything that happens feels like is in your power, you decide what happens to your character and the people beside you The game is giving me a strong disco elysium vibe in a way, which I like a lot! I can recommend this game if you want a disco elysium type of game with strange but interesting graphics and a truly deep and interesting lore!
Started a new game the moment I finished my first run. That's how good this is. The world is genuinely absorbing, the kind that makes you want to lean in, and understand what's underneath it. Its characters carry real interiority, sounding like real strangers who have begun, unprompted, to tell you something true. The writing itself deserves particular mention: it's evidently the work of human hands, crafted with care, which in this era of LLM-flooded content feels like a welcome act of integrity. The visual style is distinctive, dream-colored, delirium-logicked, folding seamlessly into the atmosphere the story is working in, with a smart use of fine art assets. Sound is minimal, but efficient. Mechanically, the game feels like a real evolution of the template Citizen Sleeper established, extending it with inventive touches that feel wholly its own. The mosaic system is especially interesting, sitting beneath everything like a second story being told at a different speed. The result is a loop that borders on hypnotic. Some will call the game short, but for me the length is exactly right, especially given how replayable the game turns out to be. Brevity here functions as a very satisfying design choice that rewards return visits. Highly, highly recommended. I'm already thrilled for whatever this developer makes next!
She Joys on my Malig till I Nant
Very good short Citizen Sleeper-like. Beautiful art direction, well-written, and containing a fascinating reactive "mosaic" system for character development. Too short though. Someone give this guy a budget, please. The next one will be unstoppable.
Really cool concept and execution. I really like the story and the writing is very well done. The gameplay is simple but engaging, and it really does feel tough but also satisfying to survive in the city. I personally find myself enjoying the side-stories more than the main plot, but I haven't completed the game yet, and I am interested where it will go, so that very well might change! Definitely worth a playthrough!
Great short game. I really enjoyed the ideas and diallogue. Play it if you like Disco Elysium or Citizen Sleeper.
I don't really review games. It isn't something I tend to do. That being said, the first playthrough of this I did a few days ago was everything I was hoping for and more -- and since I liked it so much, I decided to contribute a positive review. It has heart, and the weirdness doesn't feel forced, but rather more of a natural element. The music was a nice fit for the atmosphere. The themes touched upon in this were handled really well in my opinion without becoming too heavy or silly. I'll definitely do another run. Excited to see what the developer does next.
One of the most creative and best-written games I've played. Full of brilliant characters, existential introspection, and a surreal art style that perfectly suits the shifting nature of the world and the soul. Short but good. It'll stay with you afterwards. Bonus points for the "Paralytic States" by Against Me! reference.
Explore the city of Visceria. Dialogue options provide 3 choices and you are referred to as faceless. Your choices matter and lead to different events. You have 2 resources to balance in the game luster or energy and ego. You can gain luster by paying money or rolling exceptional on events. If you run out of ego, your stats decrease. This game is short and has themes related to faith, the working man vs corporate interests, etc. To move forward, you need to collect mirrors by completing tasks.
Pros:
- Game length is about 2-3 hours and can be played in 1 playthrough. - Art is unique and is reminiscent of Dalí surreal artwork. - Each NPC character fulfills a certain role in the story. Also, you see how their personality affect their choices and how you interact with them.
Cons:
- Only 2 different endings. Would have been nice to have 3-4 endings. Conclusion: An interesting surreal game with inspiration from RPG games like Citizen Sleeper. If you don't mind a short game with no replay value, this will be a memorable experience. Similar to listening to certain types of music, this game is a vibe and has artistic flair. My main gripe is that there are only 2 endings.
