Janosik was a legendary Slovak highlander rogue. According to the legend, he robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor, just like Robin Hood. The game is based on popular legends in which Janosik had special magical items given to him (usually) by witches. Those items gave him superhuman strength, protected him from bullets, or gave him the ability to jump over the trees. In some legends, Janosik fights with supernatural beings.
We took inspiration from the legends both for this game and the upcoming Janosik 2, and highly recommend that you read more about this hero if you enjoyed playing our retro platformer.
Please note that the Slovakian language version is available in the game’s main menu.

Janosik is a refreshing retro action-platformer that embraces the charm of classic 2D adventures while creating its own identity through folklore, exploration, and fast-paced gameplay. Developed by Onix Games and published by Retrovibe, it transforms the legendary Slovak folk hero into a pixel-art warrior on a mission to rescue his captured companions. The game focuses on simple but effective mechanics, combining platforming challenges, combat, exploration, and secret hunting into a compact adventure that feels inspired by older gaming traditions while still offering a modern indie approach. The strongest part of the experience is its unique atmosphere. The hand-crafted pixel art gives the world a colorful and memorable appearance, with detailed environments filled with forests, castles, caves, and hidden locations waiting to be discovered. Instead of relying on a generic fantasy setting, the game draws from the legends surrounding its heroic character, giving the adventure a cultural identity that helps it stand apart from many other retro-inspired platformers. The visual style is full of personality, and the animations, character designs, and environments work together to create a world that feels playful and adventurous. The gameplay revolves around exploration, precise movement, and straightforward combat. Players must navigate dangerous areas filled with traps, enemies, and platforming obstacles while searching for upgrades and hidden secrets. The controls are designed to be easy to understand, allowing the focus to remain on movement and discovery rather than complicated systems. Jumping, dodging, attacking, and exploring each area creates a satisfying rhythm that rewards patience and careful observation. One of the most enjoyable elements is the interconnected level design. Rather than simply moving from one stage to another, the adventure encourages players to investigate their surroundings and uncover optional paths. Hidden items and upgrades provide extra motivation to revisit areas and search for things that may have been missed. This exploration-focused structure gives the game a light metroidvania feel, where progression comes from both improving player skills and discovering new opportunities within the world. The combat system is intentionally simple but fits the overall design. Encounters are built around timing, positioning, and quick reactions rather than complex combos or advanced mechanics. The straightforward approach works well because it keeps the focus on the platforming and exploration. Some players may find the combat lacking depth compared to larger action games, but it complements the retro style and keeps the experience accessible. The challenge level is another important part of the adventure. The game requires attention and accurate movement, especially during sections involving hazards and difficult jumps. However, it avoids feeling unfair by keeping the focus on learning patterns and improving skills. Players who enjoy classic platformers will appreciate the balance between challenge and progression, while newcomers may need some patience as they adjust to the old-school design philosophy. The presentation is supported by a fitting soundtrack and a charming visual style that enhances the overall experience. Every part of the game feels designed around creating a nostalgic adventure rather than simply copying older titles. The developers clearly focused on delivering a short but memorable journey, and the result is a game with a strong sense of personality despite its smaller scale. Another advantage is the accessibility of the experience. The game provides a complete single-player adventure without unnecessary distractions, allowing players to focus on the core elements of exploration and platforming. Its shorter length may not appeal to those looking for a massive adventure, but the focused design helps maintain a consistent pace and prevents the gameplay from becoming repetitive. For Steam Deck players, this is a great match for handheld gaming. The simple controls, retro presentation, and lightweight design make it comfortable to play on a portable device. The short sessions and exploration-based gameplay are especially suitable for the Steam Deck, allowing players to enjoy the adventure whenever they want without needing a long commitment. Overall, Janosik is a charming and enjoyable tribute to classic platforming adventures. It succeeds because it combines nostalgic gameplay with a unique folklore-inspired setting, appealing visuals, and rewarding exploration. While it may not offer the depth or scale of larger metroidvania games, it delivers a focused experience full of character and charm. Fans of retro platformers and indie adventures will find plenty to enjoy in this memorable journey. Rating: 8/10
Really cool free platforming action game, there's some frustrating sections tho, and the confusing optional levels where you just collect outfits that is not explained how you equip them. Anyways, it's free so nothing much to complain about this.
