Hot Springs Story is a charming management simulation built around the appealing idea of creating and operating a traditional Japanese hot spring resort. Developed and published by Kairosoft Co.,Ltd, it takes the studio’s familiar pixel-based management formula and applies it to hospitality, landscaping, facility planning, and the gradual pursuit of prestige. The premise is easy to understand, but underneath its friendly appearance is a surprisingly absorbing optimization game where the arrangement of rooms and amenities can have a meaningful influence on how successfully the resort develops. The central gameplay revolves around transforming a modest inn into a thriving destination. Players construct guest rooms alongside restaurants, arcades, baths, and other facilities designed to make visitors happier and increase the establishment’s reputation. Building is straightforward enough that newcomers can quickly understand what they are supposed to do, but effective management requires more consideration. Available space needs to be used intelligently, and simply filling the property with facilities is not necessarily the best approach. Finding productive arrangements and improving the overall quality of the inn gradually becomes an important part of progressing toward the goal of creating the number-one resort. One of the game's strongest features is how naturally expansion provides a sense of accomplishment. A small property slowly develops into a busy collection of rooms, baths, entertainment facilities, restaurants, decorations, and landscaping. Instead of relying on complicated economic simulations, Hot Springs Story keeps players engaged through frequent incremental improvements. There is usually another facility worth constructing, an area that could be reorganized, or some aspect of the resort that can be improved. The result is an addictive progression loop that makes seemingly minor upgrades feel worthwhile. Landscaping provides an especially pleasant dimension to the management system. Players can create Japanese gardens using elements such as lanterns, pine trees, and azaleas. These details strengthen the identity of the resort while contributing to the broader objective of making the property attractive to increasingly desirable visitors. This combination of business management and garden construction helps distinguish the game from more conventional hotel simulators. Creating an efficient resort matters, but producing one that visually resembles a comfortable Japanese retreat is part of the appeal as well. Attracting guests gives the player another reason to keep improving. The game specifically incorporates prestigious visitors such as novelists and pop stars, turning notable customers into milestones that demonstrate how far the inn has progressed. This makes reputation feel more tangible than simply watching a numerical value increase. As the resort becomes more successful, attracting higher-profile visitors reinforces the impression that the player's decisions are producing meaningful results. Ultimately, everything feeds into the competitive objective of becoming the highest-ranked inn. The pixel-art presentation complements the gameplay extremely well. Individual characters and facilities are small and visually simple, yet the resort becomes increasingly entertaining to watch as more guests occupy the property. The graphics favor clarity and personality over technical sophistication, giving Hot Springs Story the appearance of an interactive miniature resort. Animations and character activity help prevent the management screen from feeling static, while the cheerful aesthetic maintains a relaxing atmosphere even when the player is concentrating on efficiency. Its simplicity can also be considered a limitation. Players coming from complex PC management simulations should not expect extensive financial modeling, sophisticated construction systems, or an enormous range of customization options. The game is deliberately compact and approachable. Once its core systems have been understood, portions of the progression can become repetitive because the fundamental cycle continues to involve earning resources, expanding facilities, improving the inn, satisfying visitors, and pursuing better results. Players looking primarily for deep narrative development may also find the experience relatively light because management and optimization are clearly the main attractions. On the other hand, this streamlined design makes Hot Springs Story particularly accessible. There is little unnecessary complexity separating the player from the enjoyable part of developing the resort. The relatively small scale also encourages experimentation because rearranging priorities and trying different development strategies feels manageable. Replay value therefore comes largely from optimization, discovering more effective layouts, developing the property more efficiently, and seeing how successfully the resort can be built during another playthrough. For Steam Deck use, Hot Springs Story is the kind of compact simulation that conceptually suits handheld play very well, particularly because its management loop works comfortably in shorter sessions. Steam's store page currently allows reviews to be filtered by players who played mostly on Steam Deck, but it does not display an official Valve Steam Deck compatibility rating for the game. Therefore, it is better described as lacking an official Deck compatibility classification rather than claiming it is Verified or Playable. Prospective Deck players should keep that distinction in mind when considering handheld use. Hot Springs Story succeeds by making gradual development consistently rewarding. Watching a tiny inn evolve into a prestigious resort filled with baths, rooms, restaurants, entertainment, gardens, and important guests captures the satisfaction that makes Kairosoft's management formula so effective. It may lack the complexity demanded by hardcore simulation enthusiasts, but its accessible mechanics, distinctive setting, appealing pixel presentation, thoughtful facility placement, and steady progression make it easy to become absorbed in improving the property. For players who appreciate relaxed management games with enough strategic planning to reward experimentation, it offers an enjoyable and pleasantly focused simulation. Rating: 8/10
