GULLET is a difficult cosmic-horror exploration game in which you rappel down into and explore a colossal mouth post-rapture. In it you will manage resources and control how quickly you descend by how tightly you squeeze your left hand brake in real life and in the game.

About

A short, difficult, replayable single player experience that should take a few hours.
Experimental gameplay, where the player has granular control over the strength of their jumps and the tightness of their grip on their laser tether to influence their descent speed.
Your flashlight, laser tether and D.O.T.S. flare gun all use the same power source. Use your energy carefully.
(Almost) No HUD. All interactions and information are in-world
Horror fueled by building tension and a slow descent into the darkness and danger of a mouth-shaped structure that may be alive and was somehow involved with the end of the world.
5th gen console inspired graphics (late 90's, early 00's) enhanced with some modern technologies.
Original soundtrack inspired by the horror game GOATs.

A mysterious phenomenon causes most people to vanish and the oceans to rise. Furious maws, towering over even the tallest of man-made constructs, surge from the ocean. After years alone as the last human left, your rations are depleted and your time is short. In your final moments, descend into one of the colossal gullets to satisfy the last morbid curiosity mankind will ever have.

Use your sci-fi rappelling equipment to reach the bottom of the Gullet. Your laser tether is your main piece of equipment. Use either a combination of held keys or an analog trigger to control how tightly you grip the handle and how quickly you descend. Use your flashlight and D.O.T.S. flare to light up your surroundings and carefully plan your descent. Using your equipment will deplete your battery, including the very tether from which you hang. Using the battery charger to pass ions over the lithium ion strip in your battery and stay on top of your charge level will be the key to survival.

Unforgettable.
Gullet is a unique, challenging, atmospheric, and thought-provoking game that has the player plumb the depths of the mysterious Gullet. It does a good job of capturing late-90s early-2000s aesthetics. Mechanics can be quite tricky, though this is mostly by design. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge, and enjoys a bit of psychological horror.
Very fun game well made. there was a couple moments were i had to pause the game because i got scared/goosebumps. also it is very fun to explore around and TRY to get the achievements. i got mad trying to find out the secret achievement.

This game is worth the play just for the fun that rappelling in it is. The maps are well designed for the game, and the main challenge comes from being asked to engage with the mechanics in interesting ways. The only criticism that I would offer is that the last area feels like it's from a different game. It requires engaging with a more minor mechanic, and is weaker than the rest of the game. Regardless, I can't figure out one thing: why are you still reading this? The game is $9.00 (CAD). Buy it. Play it. Love it.
After the most recent update, and the dev's discussion, I have flipped the review to positive! My biggest gripes were with how unfair and un-fun the previous climax/final section of the game felt. BUT that has been smoothed out. I still don't think that area is 100%, but its way better and less frustrating. Also this game f*cking RIPS!! one of the best horror experiences in a while. Once you get used to the controls it clicks. managing your resources, trying not to snap the rope, while dangling about the mouth of a cosmic horror, absolutely RAD. My clear video corrupted :((( its just a slide show, but i got the achievement for the speedrun, ill record another later today Deeper Thoughts on final/climax section:
As the big send off to the entire game, it still feels weak. And I am talking about where the relapse ending leads you to, I have no clue about the second ending, I don't know if that's a different section. I feel like with the invisible walls, you can fully play with the maze aspect more, and put more branching paths, but adding more of a puzzle element into it. Mouthwashing had that psuedo-maze with invisible walls, but the code scanner revealed the path you were supposed to follow, maybe your left most tool can show you the correct way to navigate or the flare could ignite a bad pathway. Also it just does not feel quite right as the final send off to the end of the game. I kind of wanted a big test of the climbing/repelling ability you had been building throughout the game at the end, but I get what the narrative is doing there.
I wanted to like this game but wow, what a terrible control scheme. I don't mean its hard, I mean its just stupid. The story seemed interesting but its not worth this ♥♥♥♥. For starters your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rope is battery powered, so instead of exploring you're constantly switching back and forth to your battery charger which is tedious, and you're just spending half the game looking at your ♥♥♥♥ trying to find the tools as they spin around your waist. You look down at a toolbelt to pick up tools instead of a hotbar or button, fine, but if you move at all your toolbelt teleports around and you grab the wrong thing. You can't move left and right well tethering....for some reason. The game covers the top half of your screen entirely in mobile-game looking tutorial text notifications which obstruct your vision and aren't that useful, or are just repeating cuz you keep standing on the trigger while trying to figure out how to place ♥♥♥♥. Also, terrible loading times for a game this ugly. I know its ugly on purpose and I like the vibe but come on, optimize this ♥♥♥♥ man. No reason for that. Reading the text logs has a mandatory 3 second time limit before you can go to the next page, but the pages have like 1-2 sentences and don't take that long to read. Also, can't see ♥♥♥♥. Flashlight sucks and the flare gun sucks even more. You can't tell whats what because everything is an ugly brown color.
Super underrated game, and the fact this is the first game from a solo indie dev is very impressive. One of the better executions of eldritch horror I've experienced in a video game, you really feel so small and meaningless, and your journey feels hopeless, but you continue on, and things just get weirder and creepier the deeper you go. It's so freaking cool. Not to say the game is perfect though, it can be pretty hard at times to discern where the correct path is, since its so dark and so geometric, your flashlight and flares honestly don't help very much, you usually just want to look for whatever lights are already existing in the environment and try to follow those. That and the controls, the controls are pretty bad, yes you do get used to them and once you do its fairly intuitive, but they are just so unconventional, lead to a lot of deaths and a lot of misplaced grapple points. But past these flaws the game is definitely worth experiencing, so unique and such great atmosphere, and such an impressive first showing from this indie dev, I'm excited to see what Joshua Allin does in the future.
Haven't finished yet, but so far - I'm having fun with this game. The atmosphere is delightfully ethereal and eerie, the climbing mechanics are fun yet challenging, and the puzzles (while a bit confusing at some times) are pretty intuitive. The hints/tooltips/tutorial can be a bit hard to understand but I think learning how to play organically/yourself is the better way to do it anyhow. Thumbsup
Masterpiece. Without a doubt this game is probably the greatest cosmic horror game I have ever play. Cannot recommend it enough to anyone who loves horror! Especially for the developers first game, this is incredible
Good game, very repayable some challenging achievements, scary/ intense, some suspenseful moments, had loads of fun. Good for people who like a bit of a challenge.
