Guards II: Prologue is a focused tactical RPG that demonstrates how a relatively small collection of mechanics can create battles that demand careful planning. Developed by Battlecruiser Games and published by HeroCraft PC, it serves as a self-contained introduction to a larger adventure while still providing enough tactical substance to stand on its own. Instead of overwhelming the player with complicated systems, it concentrates on positioning, character abilities, enemy behavior, and anticipating the consequences of every action. The defining feature is its unusual approach to turn-based combat. Players control a party of four heroes and swap their positions to trigger attacks and respond to threats. Movement is therefore much more than simply relocating a character. Changing the formation affects who attacks, how the party deals with enemies, and which hero may be exposed to retaliation. This creates encounters that often resemble tactical puzzles, where understanding the correct sequence of actions can be more valuable than relying on raw power. Each of the four heroes has a distinct combat identity, including unique attacks, powerful abilities, and different resistances to incoming damage. These differences encourage players to consider the party as a coordinated unit rather than four independent fighters. A hero who performs exceptionally well against one threat might struggle against another, making formation management essential. The best moments come from recognizing how the characters complement each other and arranging them in ways that create efficient combinations while limiting the enemy's opportunities. The combat system is deliberately unforgiving of careless decisions. Since every movement can influence the entire formation, a poorly considered action may leave the party in an awkward position that takes several turns to correct. This gives victories a satisfying sense of accomplishment because successful encounters usually feel earned through planning. The game remains approachable enough for newcomers to understand its fundamental rules, but its increasing tactical demands ensure that simply learning the basics does not guarantee effortless progress. Progression is supported by magical artifacts and runes that strengthen the heroes and provide additional strategic possibilities. These elements add useful customization without distracting from the positioning system at the heart of the experience. Upgrades can improve the party's effectiveness, but they do not completely compensate for weak tactics. This balance is important because it keeps the player's decisions relevant throughout the available missions rather than allowing progression alone to trivialize encounters. The campaign consists of seven challenging missions built around a journey through Hell. Players face demons, ancient horrors, and other supernatural enemies while attempting to protect the human world from an escalating threat. Three dark biomes provide environmental variety, with creatures drawing inspiration from Egyptian, Slavic, and Western European mythology. Mixing these traditions gives the enemy roster more personality than a conventional collection of generic fantasy monsters and helps each section of the journey establish a somewhat different atmosphere. Its pixel-art presentation complements the tactical structure particularly well. Characters and enemies remain visually readable during combat, which is important when positioning determines so much of the strategy. The dark fantasy environments establish an appropriately hostile atmosphere without sacrificing battlefield clarity. The presentation is not attempting to compete with elaborate cinematic RPGs, but its visual direction fits the smaller scale of the project and gives the demonic environments and creatures enough character to remain memorable. The limited campaign is naturally the largest drawback. Seven missions provide enough opportunity to understand the combat system and experience several variations of its tactical challenges, but the adventure can end just as its mechanics begin showing greater potential. Players looking for a lengthy RPG filled with extensive exploration, dialogue, side quests, and elaborate character development will find the scope restrictive. As a prologue, however, that brevity makes sense because its primary purpose is to introduce the mechanics and establish the foundation for the larger Guards II: Chaos in Hell. Steam Deck compatibility deserves some qualification. The Steam store information available for the game does not provide a clearly surfaced official Valve Deck compatibility rating, so it would be inappropriate to describe it as formally Verified based on the available information. Steam does, however, expose review filtering for users who played primarily on Steam Deck, indicating that the title has been played on the handheld. Its turn-based structure, straightforward interface, modest visual presentation, and lack of reaction-heavy gameplay also make it conceptually well suited to portable sessions. Players specifically concerned about flawless Deck operation should still treat compatibility as something to verify for their particular configuration rather than assuming official Verified status. What makes the experience appealing is its efficiency. There is very little unnecessary complexity between the player and the tactical decisions that matter. Battles continually ask whether the current formation is appropriate, whether swapping two heroes creates a better attack opportunity, and whether immediate damage is worth sacrificing a stronger position for the following turn. That constant decision-making gives the game substantially more strategic personality than its simple appearance might initially imply. For players who enjoy turn-based tactics, party management, dark fantasy, and encounters that behave almost like combat puzzles, this is an effective introduction to a promising system. Its restricted amount of content prevents it from feeling like a full-scale tactical RPG, but the distinctive swapping mechanic, four complementary heroes, artifacts, runes, mythological enemies, and carefully structured battles make good use of the smaller scope. It succeeds primarily because it understands that tactical depth does not require excessive complexity. A few understandable rules can produce compelling battles when every action has consequences. Rating: 8/10
