Do I recommend this game? Yes. But with a HUGE caveat for anyone wanting to play on controller. It SUCKS! I wish they could make it work as fluid as Diablo does. Also I'm playing on a big screen TV and the words and icons are SO small. Please fix this. The game has been out for so long, there is no excuse to have these issues. As far as gameplay goes overall, SO solid and so much fun! I just prefer controller sometimes and this NOT intuitive for controllers.
it's a cool game i'm sure but not being able to attack while moving even with a controller tires me. So dont see this as me bashing the game but just warning fellow like minded people that you can't attack and move at the same time so each attack makes you stand still just aint fluid enough for me.
many thoughts on this, some scattered but i'll try my best to make it intelligible. grim dawn, like many diablo II clones, is an action/looter rpg, where you're constantly changing gear to go through hordes of enemies, building your skill tree to have more ways of dealing with more diffficulty encounters. that's the gist of it. but, what grim dawn truly is, is a calculator game. you gonna press a series of buttons, that you can choose based on both luck and some sort of skill (with numbers), and pray to god these numbers are higher than your adversary. it's not completely devoid of skill, else it would be an incremental game, and i'd be playing cookie clicker instead of it. there's skill involved in the game, you can use your abilities and dash in the right moments to go through the challenges the game presents. but, on its most basic form, it's a calculator game. you gotta either be really good with numbers, have insane luck or pray to whatever god you believe in that your numbers are higher than your enemy. and if they aren't? then you gonna hit a wall, and probably with your head. and brother, i hit the wall so hard so hard and so many times in my 48 hours played that i'm basically muhammad ali. it's a game that will require you to look a guide from beginning to end, or else you may beat it, but you gonna punish yourself so hard it might not be worth it. it sure wasn't for me. now, why a positive review? because games like this, diablo II, path of exile (i can't speak for path of exile II because i played very little of it) deserve to exist, are well done, have many people who genuinely enjoy them, and, most important, are art. and art should not be confined in any way. but this game scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me of the genre, in a way i don't think i'll ever play something in the same vein ever again.
I have been keeping an eye on this game since they days when we only had the first area. Lot of changes since then. However some things never really changed. So here's my gripe list: * Rigid characters - There's just not a lot of builds that work. You got a lot of options to waste your points in, but in terms of effective game progression you can either be A: some kind of melee attacker. Or B: Some kind of gunslinger. The annoying thing is there are spells, and it feels like you could focus on pure magic but no - it doesn't work mid/late game without some kind of basic attack making you a hybrid spell blade type which wasn't the idea. There is 0 ways to lifesteal as a pure mage. * "Fast-paced Visceral Combat" - this was a joke right Crate? Cause your game started off slow, mid game was still slow, and even with the addition of evades and jumps, most of the builds you can come up with still leave a lot to be desired when we talk about fast pace. Your endgame isn't even fast cause everything gets so much hp, and we have very little to actually scale off of in the game that now one boss is 5+mins of auto attacks. That sound got old fast. * Friendly and Enemy Factions - Genuinely has 0 impact on the game. Especially cause when you complete the game and go into NG+ via going up in difficulty, you keep all the factions you made friends with so just like pokemon you can truly catch em all. What was the goal? Besides wasting our time with a reputation bar for recipes. * Hundreds of Item Skills - AND YOU CAN'T SCALE THEM cause the game scales off skill levels more than anything. So that cool skill granted by a mythical rune is pretty to look at, but won't be something you could actually do anything fun with like center a build around it. So aside from stacking "chance to trigger" skills, honestly why bother? Why bother using any skills when you can max attack speed, lifesteal, and hp and just never die? That is the only build in this game worth playing. You left every other idea so starved of options that creativity can't exist in your game. You made it even worse by adding Berserker. Like why play anything else at that point Crate? Why? * "Rebuild the World - Help human enclaves survive and flourish by securing vital necessities, rebuilding structures and rescuing survivors who can then lend their services to your cause." aka dumb pit stops and reasons to go back to town to grab some xp. This also has way less impact than what we are led to believe. Most of the people you rescue are decorations. Repairs are just unlocking new areas, I feel catfished. There's no depth to this at all. "Quests with Choice and Consequence" WHERE????!!?!?! TLDR: I got catfished, don't make the same mistake I did. I love indie games, but man this had like a decade to become something and I feel like all I got was the cardboard cutout instead of the real thing. Just play Diablo or Path of Exile 1/2.
I don't like the expansion. Too much the same for me and a lot of added confusion. I will probably go back to 1.26
I'm not impressed. Melee (hitbox) feels clunky, running around mobs half the time. Ranged feels weak (which may be me). Tooltip weapon comparison means nothing, you need to dig in and crunch numbers, but I'm not an accountant. I like this to be intuitive and in Grim Dawn it's not. Same goes for resistances. More different elemental damages doesn't make for a more interesting game but feels like spreadsheet optimisation. Without expansions the game feels unfinished and incomplete (which I think is cheating). I like the atmosphere (that the graphics are somewhat dated doesn't bother me at all) and the lore, but it failed to hook me.
