Grand Theft Auto IV (Main Game, Spoiler Review) The Good Overall I think the game is framed really well and is aimed to convey a very specific message, one that the whole game is designed around (for better and worse). Niko comes fresh off the boat from Siberia to the land of opportunity. Being promised fast cars, fancy apartments and beautiful women by his cousin Roman who claims to be living the American dream. He soon realizes though that he has an old run down apartment, is in severe debt to a Russian mobster and runs a small taxi company. The whole game is centered around this idea, that the American dream isn't real. The color palette is dark grays and browns setting a depressing tone over the city. Its full of corrupt politicians and police battling against crime families and mafias. Niko throughout the game is essentially a hitman who does jobs and kills people for whoever pays as his goal is always to earn more money. This is quite cool in that although you keep earning more and more money, there is barely anything to spend it on. There are no auto shops to mod cars, no weapon attachments, very limited clothing options etc. Its all to reinforce the idea that simply having more money matters little. The Bad All of this is also everything I do not like about the game. When it comes to the actual gameplay it feels very limiting, not being able to customize anything. Mission design is also very samey, where a majority of the missions is framed like this: Watch cutscene > Drive to location > Kill random guy > Phonecall to end the mission Doing this loop over and over gets incredibly tedious and the few times it deviates from it, the game is much more fun. I suppose the monotony of the missions is also something that is supposed to relate back to the theme of the game, but when it comes down to actually playing through it, its quite boring. Shooting is incredibly outdated. The crosshair snaps to an enemy and locks onto their torso. If you want to get a headshot you have to fight the auto aim like crazy, as it desperately wants to keep itself centered on the torso. This also happens on mouse and keyboard. I played with a controller and took off auto aim and the game got so much better afterwards. Shooting mechanics themselves do still feel outdated though. Driving is incredibly weighty. I get that they were going for a much more realistic system, but to me it feels far too heavy. Turning is INCREDIBLY slow and none of the cars feel really fast. Conclusion: Although I really like the premise, the overall story that is being told and its themes, the actual gameplay of it is quite tedious, slow and quite clunky at times. The game is quite old, so I do not blame it for being a little janky, but it can get annoying at times. 6/10
