overall good for in between. can recommend it.

Gil’s Lucid Dreams by Oblion Studio is a small but ambitious psychological horror game that delves into the fragile line between desire, memory, and nightmare. At its center is Gil, a young man disillusioned with his ordinary life and longing for something more meaningful—dreams of a home, a family, and a sense of fulfillment that reality cannot provide. To escape his dissatisfaction, he turns to lucid dreaming, a place where he believes he can control his own destiny. Yet the deeper he ventures, the less control he retains, as repressed fears and darker aspects of his personality surface, transforming his imagined sanctuary into a hostile and surreal prison. The narrative revolves around piecing together Gil’s fractured psyche, exposing secrets and traumas that shape both the man he is and the dream world he inhabits. The game excels most in atmosphere, trading cheap jump scares for mood and tension. Each dream sequence is designed to be unsettling, often twisting familiar spaces into distorted and unfamiliar forms. The architecture shifts unexpectedly, corridors extend into impossibility, and shadows hint at threats that never fully reveal themselves. This commitment to subtle dread rather than overt horror allows the environments to tell much of the story, mirroring Gil’s loss of lucidity as nightmares creep in. The sense of unease is heightened by minimal visibility, abstract imagery, and a sound design that thrives on silence and distant noises. It is in these dreamscapes that the player feels both drawn in and repelled, compelled to keep moving even as the spaces grow increasingly alien. Gameplay is simple but thematically tied to the narrative. Puzzles form the core of progression, often requiring the player to reconstruct pieces of Gil’s life and memories to move forward. These aren’t particularly complex or innovative, but they fit the dreamlike logic of the world and add to the psychological underpinnings of the experience. Another recurring mechanic involves the use of pills: without them, Gil cannot fall asleep, and within the dream world they serve as a fragile tether between stability and collapse. This feature underscores the game’s focus on mental fragility, reinforcing the idea that Gil’s control is slipping not only in his dreams but in his waking life as well. Despite its creative ambitions, Gil’s Lucid Dreams is limited by its indie scope and technical shortcomings. The transitions between reality and dreams can feel abrupt, breaking immersion, and the pacing sometimes drags in sections where exploration becomes repetitive. Graphical fidelity and animation quality are modest, with environments occasionally feeling empty or unfinished. These flaws, however, are partly mitigated by the game’s very low price point, which frames it more as a short experimental piece than a polished horror production. For players who approach it with measured expectations, its imperfections may be outweighed by the unique vision at its core. Reception has been mixed, reflecting this balance between ambition and execution. Some players appreciate the slow-burn psychological approach, the eerie atmosphere, and the symbolic storytelling, while others find it too rough and unpolished to be engaging. At just a few hours long, the experience is brief, but for its cost it offers an unusual dive into the subconscious that feels distinct from mainstream horror. It’s less about being scared in the moment and more about lingering unease, the type of discomfort that lingers after closing the game. In the end, Gil’s Lucid Dreams is best understood as a moody, experimental exploration of the human mind. It doesn’t deliver sweeping narratives or refined mechanics, but it succeeds in capturing the unnerving experience of a dream turning against its dreamer. Its modest scale and technical flaws will turn some players away, yet for those willing to embrace its strangeness and atmosphere, it offers a memorable glimpse into psychological horror that feels personal and unsettling. It may not be a dream fully realized, but it is one worth visiting for players who appreciate indie horror that values atmosphere over spectacle. Rating: 6/10
Atrocious. There are so many problems I don't know where to begin, this just adds to the pile of terrible horror games which are all over steam. For starters, the dialogue and speech are woeful. Spelling, grammar, and even pronunciation errors abound. It's honestly as if someone used google translate, then read it from the screen, so someone else could transcribe it and add it to the game. I really don't know how else it could have been done to end up being this poor. And for what essentially is a narrative game this is beyond excusable. On top of sounding terrible, it looks ugly as well. Why they thought it necessary to add a mirror to the bedroom so you could see how badly your character animates I'll never understand. You also have to take sleeping pills to remain in the dream that you're exploring. Which basically amounts to taking health pills as your health slowly dwindled. Not a terrible mechanic as it stands, but for some reason the developer thought he would obstruct your vision more and more as your health ticks down. It's gets to the point where you get to half health where the game becomes unplayable and you need to take your health pack, which kinda defeats the purpose of the mechanic.. And it's a weird choice of design for the blurring, it basically looks like your eyes are sweating. At first I figured I was just being rained upon and thought it was a bug as I was fully indoors. Also, when you finally pick up a gun, the reflections are done so poorly that the metallic sheen at the back of the gun is blinding half the time. Thankfully you don't have the gun long, nor do you have to endure combat with it. Also, for a horror game, there really isn't much in the way of horror. The gameplay consists of walking around, hovering up pills, and wading through a couple of irritating puzzles as you explore a few classrooms and listen to a mind-numbing description of how someone was bullied at school, which seems to account for the majority of the understandable part of this mess of a story. The game also seems to send a dangerous message about guns in schools, and how they help to solve problems. At least that's how I interpreted it. But overall, avoid, no matter the discount. It's uniquely awful.
