I feel the original game looked better. I could also be mistaken but it feels like some content was removed. I see no improvements made from the original game.
"Gears of War? More like Tears of War" - Chad Warden
A better port than the ultimate edition, and still a fun game 20 years later. But NOT worth the current asking price. Wait for a sale.
Yo quería pantalla dividida :c
I wish Steam had an option for mixed. As much as I want to leave a positive review for an AMAZING game, it's just not fun in 2026. Given that TC abandoned this game months ago, the multiplayer is dead. All that's left are hardcore Gears players who are INSANELY good at the game. There's no on-ramp for returning players and no lobby I have played has even been remotely "balanced" skill-wise because as I understand this game lacks any sort of skill-based matchmaking that *effectively* matches you with like skill players. I was unable to find any competitive games. The most popular mode is Social King of the Hill - which is a fun game type but if you aren't prepared to sink HOURS into learning hidden mechanics and toss yourself into wall bouncing hell, you won't find much else to do in 2026. I haven't played the campaign as of this review, but the mechanics are all there like it was 2006 (or 2015). I have no doubt the campaign delivers even if there are some graphical choices that deflate the allure of the original. Performance on my system is stellar. Well optimized game from what I can tell. Pick it up if you are a Gears veteran and love the campaign. But be cautious of what you're getting yourself into if you want to play multiplayer.
It's the old Gears of War, but available for purchase, and unlike the Ultimate edition, it has a playable performance. It's mainly nostalgia bait. If you have played the old game you know what you are signing up for. If you are new, the campaign is worth a playthrough. (I didn't try the multiplayer.) Game is still fun, but it shows its age, it's a lot more sluggish and clunky compared to Gears 5. For some reason the art style got cleaner than the original, and encountered some bad hitboxes on walls, and a glitch where we need to push a car to progress, but it got stuck before reaching its intended destination making the fight unreasonably difficult. The game is kind of easy even on insanity, though there are some annoying encounters. If the original was still available for purchase this wouldn't have much of a right to exist but it isn't. It's fine.
Highly do not recommend! First, no split screen, which doesn't make any sense in 2025, but its old game that was meant to be played on the couch with a friend, and you can play it on PS5, so why is it missing on PC. Secondly, horrible performance, really!!! Horrible performance in a 20-year-old game. And finally, and looks like a crime. Now it's sunny and bright its like they just crank britness to 200% and shipped and shut up everyone. The game's core is a dark story, and yes its fine to improve some aspect in a specific part when it can benefit the atmosphere, but everywhere, even at night when you can see every detail, and it's not good. How hard it can be, I still don't understand a 1-to-1 remake or remaster and simply improve game quality, not to decide what best for me. You can do that if you are a genius, but in the The Coalition, there are no geniuses, even good devs, just people who need a job and do everything to keep it.
Only giving this a positive review because the game itself is still fun despite the issues. That being said, Gears Reloaded is simply a port of Ultimate Edition (released 11 years ago) with bare minimum improvements to the multiplayer and more bugs than both the original game and Ultimate Edition. Furthermore this game is $60 AUD despite the fact that Ultimate Edition is almost the exact same game and has been sold for around $30 for almost a decade now. This was also what we got instead of a GOW 2 & 3 remaster which the community has been begging for since Ultimate Edition released. On the upside, I found the game to run well however it's a shame that a game as good as GOW got a half assed port instead of an actual definitive edition. If you've never played a gears title before and you don't own an Xbox, than this game isn't a horrible purchase on sale, but other than that you should avoid this one.
Played through the campaign for gears of war reloaded. This review will be mainly about the campaign and the redesign of the game. Pros: Graphics: They did a great job remastering this game. Reloaded brings to life the original gears in all the best ways while maintaining its grittyness and hyper violence. The world is nice to look at, with some really good lighting effects and also insane skyboxes. Overall solid job done. Gameplay: It's gears of war. It plays exactly like gears of war should. Its a little janky like the original, but overall its very solid. The guns feel good, the violence and dismemberment is there. The headshots, when they explode, have the satisfying sound everyone can hear. It's all very gears of war, exactly what you want from the franchise. Weapons: Plenty of weapons to choose from. Has a decently varied experience. Not as much as the modern gears, but its there. Co-op: like usual, you can play the entire game co-op. Thats how i played the game and it made the experience even better. Story: as the set up for the better gears of wars, i feel the story still stands the test of time. I would like to see a remaster like this for 2 and 3. Cons: Glitchy: the game can be a little glitch. We ran into a few bugs here and there but overall it was a solid game. Still though, for a remaster theres no excuse it should be glitchy at launch. Xbox servers: We suffered random disconnects a couple of times. Xbox servers tend to do this from time to time. I dont understand why this is. I experience nothing like this is any other games outside of xbox. Overall reloaded was a solid remaster, keeping to the core of the franchise, boosting it with modern visual technollgy and putting it out there for people. I enjoyed my time playing this game and if you can find it on sale i highly implore checking it out if you are a gears fan. Thanks for reading.
I love this game so much. Why don't you put Gears 2, 3, and 4 on steam already? We NEED it! I wanna say, cross platform campaign co-op works on this game, as long its on separate systems. I am under the impression that split-screen "couch" co-op of any kind is NOT supported. I am currently running through the campaign with my dad, who uses Xbox. This game is so nostalgic, I grew up playing Gears games.
