NOW 寻味记 is a really short visual novel built around Cantonese morning tea, and I like how different that makes it feel from most of the free visual novels I come across. I am following Gao Tang, who has already become the owner of Gao's Tea House after going through a lot to get there, but something goes wrong and he ends up back at the point where his earlier story began. From there, my choices start changing what happens, and the game gives me four different endings to find. The whole thing has a very calm and gentle feeling, even though there is a strange time and fate element underneath the story. The food theme is easily what gives it most of its personality for me. Cantonese morning tea is not just being used as a bit of background decoration. The tea house, the food and the small conversations around it are what make the setting feel warm and familiar. I like that the story is more interested in ordinary moments and personal feelings than trying to create some huge dramatic adventure. There is something quite nice about playing a game where food and a quiet place are such a big part of the atmosphere. The choice system is simple, but it gives me a reason to replay it. I am making decisions throughout the story and those choices affect where the plot goes, so I cannot just assume I will see everything in one run. With four endings, I can try different combinations and see how Gao Tang's story changes. I also like that the game is short enough that replaying it does not feel like a massive commitment. Once I know what I am looking for, going back and trying another route is fairly easy. The biggest weakness for me is the length. This is definitely a small visual novel, and I can get through the main experience without spending a huge amount of time on it. The four endings help, but there is only so much depth I can expect from a game this short. I would have liked some longer character development and more time spent with the tea house and its people because the setting is probably the strongest thing it has going for it. Just when I start getting comfortable with the world, the story is already moving towards the ending. The presentation is quite nice and fits the relaxed mood. There are character scenes and CG illustrations that make the more important moments feel a little more special, and the simple visual novel format keeps everything easy to follow. I also like that the game does not try to overwhelm me with loads of systems. I am mainly reading, making choices and seeing where the story takes me. The downside is that the game is currently only available in Simplified Chinese, so I would not be able to properly experience it if I could not read Chinese. What I respect most is that the game knows exactly what it wants to be. It is not pretending to be a huge role playing game or some massive branching adventure. It is a small story about food, memory, choices and finding a bit of peace in the middle of everything else going on. The time loop idea gives it something extra without completely taking over the story, and the four endings give me enough reason to go back once I have finished the first one. I just wish there was more of it because the idea and setting have enough charm to support a longer experience. Overall, NOW 寻味记 is a pleasant little visual novel that I enjoyed mainly because of its unusual Cantonese morning tea setting and relaxed atmosphere. I like the branching choices, four endings and simple presentation, while the short length and limited language support make it harder for me to rate it much higher. It does not have the depth of a much larger visual novel, but I think it works well as a short and gentle story that I can finish without a huge time commitment. For me, it is a decent little free experience that leaves a good impression even though I wanted more from it. Rating: 6.9/10
