Forbidden Solitaire

Forbidden Solitaire is an absolute gem. At its core, it’s a straightforward solitaire game wrapped in grim-fantasy and horror trappings, but what really makes it special is the meta layer surrounding it. You’re playing a supposedly rare and deeply controversial PC game that vanished after its release in the late 90s, with rumours that it may be haunted and capable of influencing, or even possessing, the player. The visual and audio presentation completely nails the feeling of a 90s PC game. Having played a lot of those games back then, I found the whole experience wonderfully nostalgic. It doesn’t just imitate the era from a distance. It feels like it genuinely understands the strange atmosphere, design choices, humour and rough-edged charm that made those games so memorable. It’s also packed with clever Easter eggs and nods to gaming history. Names like Will Roberta, Timmy Garriott and Romero are delightful pulls for anyone who grew up with PC gaming in that era. I had several genuine laugh-out-loud moments spotting references and seeing how they were worked into the story. The solitaire itself is easy to understand and relaxing to play, while the increasingly dark mystery gives you a strong reason to keep going. It’s funny, unsettling, nostalgic and quite clever. A phenomenal little horror-coded card game, and an absolute delight from beginning to end.

This game is VERY scary but also very addicting. I like the concept of playing a game inside of another game. Very creative! 8/10
