Overall: 6/10

Story:
There's no narrative here at all. That means no dialogue, cutscenes, or plot points of any kind. Instead of a story, this game features a straightforward career mode/campaign where you progress through three main championship tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, which total out to 36 races. Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing whatsoever. This game is from before the era where every racing game needed a super corny narrative to go along with it, so it's 100% focused on the arcade-style racing gameplay. The only real sense of progression comes from climbing through each championship tier, unlocking faster vehicles, and competing against tougher opponents, but that's really all a game like this needs. It knows exactly what it wants to be and never wastes your time trying to force an unnecessary story into the experience. Every race exists solely to give you another excuse to wreck your opponents and continue working your way toward the Gold championship, and I honestly appreciate that streamlined approach.
Gameplay:
I like the gameplay at its core, but this game flew under my radar growing up and I have no nostalgia for it at all, so in 2026 it just feels like there's more to complain about with the gameplay than there is to enjoy. For starters, the things that I enjoy: The driving is genuinely fun. It feels fluid, the cars all have distinct handling characteristics, and there's enough variety between them that you can probably find something that suits your preferences if one vehicle isn't clicking with you. Additionally, the general destruction available around each track, and of course the dynamic car deformation system are surprisingly dense and advanced for this game's age. Watching fences splinter apart, roadside objects explode into pieces, and every collision leave visible damage on all of the cars still feels impressive today, especially considering this game came out in 2004. Unfortunately, that's also where the positives stop for me. In regards to my gripes, this game just simply doesn't reward/encourage good driving. What I'm referring to specifically is the fact that you only gain nitro from crashing into environmental objects and impacts with other racers, like the game is deliberately punishing you for driving clean and passively. The thing is though, crashing into objects almost always slows you down or significantly damages your car, and the reset system when you crash hard is completely unforgiving. It literally punishes you by respawning you in dead last for playing aggressively (like the game clearly wants you to), even if you crashed while comfortably in second place. I'm assuming the thought process behind the nitro system was that earning boost through impacts would act as a compensation mechanic by helping you recover the speed you just lost and quickly catch back up/get ahead of the competition. The problem, however, is that it hardly ever actually feels worth it because of my next complaint: the AI rubberbanding. It genuinely feels like the AI is cheating at times, and honestly, it probably is. When you're in first place, the AI behind you receives an obvious performance boost. Even after crashing into objects, taking poor racing lines, or colliding with each other, they'll often erase a gap of several seconds way quicker than feels believable. Conversely, if you're the one trying to catch up, it rarely feels like you're given an equal advantage. The AI will continue setting a ridiculous pace, and if they establish a big enough lead, especially after you've lost 5-10 seconds because of a major crash, it feels nearly impossible to work your way back into first place. Meanwhile, if you manage to build a 10-second lead of your own, the AI can erase it the moment you take a corner slightly too slow. Lastly, I simply didn't enjoy any of the quirky bonus mini-game levels. I'm well aware that FlatOut is renowned for these game modes, so call me a party pooper if you must, but they're just not fun to me. Launching a driver out of a car offers almost no strategic depth or replay value once the initial shock value wears off, and the whole concept relies almost entirely on the novelty of early ragdoll physics, which wore off years ago. All in all, I think the driving is fun, but the rest of the gameplay has too many frustrating design decisions for me to confidently recommend that anyone else play it.
World:
I think the world/level design is pretty good overall. Each race is full of destructible objects, environmental hazards, and shortcuts to keep things interesting throughout the whole track. The only notable problem I can really point out with this aspect of the game is really just the lack of variety with the general backdrops, but even that's not too problematic since a single visual backdrop can host around 4 to 6 different races. The developers just re-routed the barriers, reversed the direction, or cut off certain paths to create a "new" track out of the exact same trees, logs, and background hills. So while you're technically driving on the same roads a lot, it's not always the same route.
Visuals:
The visuals/graphics are clearly dated, but I think they are still pretty great given the context of their age. This game doesn't attempt a realistic aesthetic at all, and because the developers avoided complex "modern" shaders that tend to age poorly, they were able to sidestep the muddy look that a lot of mid-2000s games had, with their gritty brown filters/overly processed textures. Additionally, when you couple the previously mentioned car-deformation system with the general graphical style, it's obvious that the visuals have aged surprisingly well for a PS2-era game, especially when you consider how many other games from this period can look much rougher by modern standards. Even more than that, regardless of the issues I have with the gameplay, I really respect how well this game has been maintained on a technical level. Considering how most games that are over 20 years old have trouble running at all on modern hardware, I really appreciate that this game not only runs exceptionally well with consistent high frame rates and zero crashing issues, but it was also given ultrawide support at some point in the past. I'm a huge stickler for including ultrawide support in all modern releases, so seeing a game almost as old as myself get such treatment while some current-day developers omit this feature for no reason, will always get kudos from me.
Music/Sound Design:
The music and sound design is probably the area of this game that has aged the least gracefully. Starting with the sound design, it's just very dated, simple as that. Everything from the engine sounds to the car impacts and tire screeches just lacks the resonance, depth, and dynamic aspect that I personally have passively come to expect due to modern titles. It's not grating or a deal breaker by any means, but all the audio is noticeably compressed across the board, which makes every sound effect feel a lot flatter than it probably did back when this game originally released. That extends to the music too, which despite being a pretty good heavy rock soundtrack that compliments the gameplay well, also sounds technically dated and compressed. But speaking of "technically dated", the biggest issue with the music is the fact that there's only one song that plays during races. It's always the same song, but regardless of which song you get at the start of the race, that song will just loop once it ends (unless you restart through the pause menu since doing so assigns a new song to race to.) It's not that bad at first, especially since the soundtrack itself fits the destructive, chaotic racing pretty well, but by the time you get to the end of the campaign, hearing the same tracks loop over and over in a race multiple times has already been exhausting for a while.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Wreckfest just older. Great music
Klasyk z którego wyrosła legenda, tj. FlatOut 2. Po ograniu drugiej części widać jakie dokładnie mechaniki zostały rozwinięte, dopracowane i poprawione, Przyjemna gra chociaż toporna, niesprawiedliwa i miejscami irytująca.
Objectively it is a good game. Still very fun. Subjectively, I just beat the campaign and I freaking hated it. There is something I still don't understand about the car physics. Sometimes the car handles beautifully, going into very controllable slides, cutting corners, responding to inputs, feels good. Then it suddenly becomes an uncontrolable boat, sliding for miles right into forest with no grip whatsoever, Sometimes a random rock on the dirt sends you flying. Sometimes it's a light tap on the back that does that. Further into campaign these random problems become more and more present. Sometimes affecting computer opponents as well, but primarily bothering you. You restart, have the race die because of random BS, restart again, die again... Hardly a good time. Economy and tuning are not great. It takes a lot of money to have just one car fully kitted out. About one full campaign worth of winnings, mostly 1st place. And when you trade in a car for a new one and everything you spent on upgrades just vanishes. So you either stick with the same car for the whole campaign or you replay races A LOT. Much of stunt modes are jank. Fun for parties, but that's it. However, all these years later it still looks and plays fine. It didn't age badly at all. Worth picking up for cheap and checking one of the most unusual racing games of old.
Still One of the Best Arcade Racers Ever Made
It's honestly surprising how well this game has aged. Both the gameplay and the visuals still hold up incredibly well. It feels just as fun, fast, and satisfying as it did back in 2008 when I first played it. The soundtrack is the cherry on top. It's easily one of the best soundtracks ever. Huge respect to the developers for not abandoning the game. They recently updated it, so it now runs properly on modern hardware, and they even added Steam achievements and other Steam features. It's always great to see an old classic getting this kind of support. If you've never played FlatOut, don't let its age or visuals scare you away. It still plays amazingly well, and I honestly think it always will. The formula is simple but incredibly effective. Without exaggeration, FlatOut is one of the foundation stones of modern arcade racing games.
An ancient game with amazing physics, and it still works. Even on the Steam Deck.
FlatOut is proof that childhood trauma can be fun. You don’t race in this game. You enter a controlled disaster and pray the driver survives long enough to become airborne in style. The physics were stupid. The crashes were glorious. The minigames were unhinged. The memories are immortal. Modern racing games try to look realistic. FlatOut looked like a lawsuit and played like a masterpiece. Legendary game. Absolute madness. Peak childhood.
