FLASH OF THE BLADE X is another "boomer shooter", this one with a "ninja" theme, making this, effectively, a ripoff of Daikatana that is somehow so much worse than Daikatana was. It seems to be a hallmark of the developer to make boomer shooters without much shooting, preferring instead to rely on melee weapons, punishingly bad difficulty, with very few, poorly placed pickups, and otherwise somewhat sloppy level design to make a frustrating and repetitive experience, as opposed to the fun and interesting experiences you'd get from games like Hexen or Duke Nuke'm 3D. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets with crap 2D retro pixel "art" textures on them, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. I know in this case it's deliberate, but at the same time, making games look bad on purpose is a disservice to gamers and the gaming industry. This very poor quality visual style is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, worse, it doesn't authentically recreate the 1990's vibe the developer is hoping people will accept instead of doing their job properly, and that's just another reason to avoid it. These flaws make this game fall far short of the professional standards we expect from a modern PC release. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players, which is a clear indication nobody was interested in the game at all, for obvious reasons. This costs $3, which is how much the developer should be paying people to play this and for compensation.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Not quite the quality of shadow warrior, but for $3 this is a decent little game. Finished it in maybe 3-4 hours, played in offline mode so my playtime is not accurately reflected here. Decent minibosses and nice tunes.
For 2 dollars its pretty solid. If you have 2 dollars and want a game you could beat in an hour it's a fun time.
not quite ninja gaiden but cool
I really like this. If you took the gameplay of Wolfenstein 3D, sped it up and changed the theme to ninjas, you'd have this game. Honestly it's a super simple first person shooter (or 'slasher' might be more accurate) that has you running around killing various ninjas with a samurai sword, throwing stars, a crossbow or sai. Absolutely great for a mindless hour or so. I spent nearly 2 hours playing, but I had to repeat about 4 levels because while the game says GAME SAVED after every level, if you quit and come back to the game, you only seem to be able to load from a manual save. This messed me up. I made sure to manually save after this. Otherwise, a great little title and I'm looking forward to checking out the other DOSman games as I got 9 of them in a very bargainous bundle. This is the first one I've tried and it absolutely exceeded my expectations!
charming little micro boomer shooter. Had a great time with it until I got clipped out of level and was stranded in the void for eternity
Ok, completely biased review here. I love Dosman Games's uh...games. And this is one of my favorites. I absolutely could nitpick it to hell but it's just a breezy fun time. Last a few hours. Can get it on sale for like a buck. Love the theme with this one. Some interesting ideas too. Like the enemies hiding in the bamboo shoots. Good stuff.
Fun little game, has some cool sprites, enemies, weapons etc. Very short (61 minutes for me), but the game's very cheap, so that's okay. It was all pretty good, though it'd be nice to have more content. The music was really nice, which is appreciated!
A bite-sized FPS that features ninjas, ninjas, and more ninjas. Flash of the Blade X is a Retro FPS game developed by DOSMan Games using the Easy FPS Editor engine. You play as a Ninja who was betrayed by their Ninja clan and now seeks revenge. Featuring a handful of ninja weapons against a variety of sneaky ninjas with slightly tougher ninja bosses to take your ninja skills on. It greatly resembles something you might find on a Shareware floppy disk back in the day given it's artstyle, level design, and it's length. Gameplay wise, Flash of the Blade X features Retro FPS gameplay staples with keys to find, lots of enemies to beat, and the occasional secret. Levels have a Wolfenstein 3D-esque design to it with a lot of 90 degree walls with some extra height factored in. With the occasional boss fight every few levels. As a Ninja you have access to a variety of familiar weaponry like Katanas, Shurikens, Crossbow, Sais, etc. With melee weapons taking a higher priority given their lack of needing ammo and ranged mostly being used for targets you can't easily reach. With ammo gained from pickups hidden in breakable items as well with health. Enemies either beeline to your location once alert or if they're a ranged foe, pick you off from afar. It's overall a pretty basic gameplay loop akin to the simplicity of very early FPS games with a ninja flair. It reminds me the most of early betas of Shadow Warrior, of all things. It made me wish while playing that FotBX somehow remixed some of the ideas from those betas that were dropped, like the magic system. But given the engine who knows if that would have been possible. Stylewise, Flash of the Blade X has a very "DOS-game" pixel art... art style. which given that the developer and publisher is "DOSMan Games" is pretty fitting. It's also pretty notable that despite the game's fairly short scope there is a decent amount of variety with the enemy and environment graphics making it so that you don't feel like you're constantly retreading the same ground. As such, even despite the engine's limitations there is a attempt at designing the levels as locations in this style and it's pretty charming. Kinda like a: "what if the Wolf 3D engine could make houses or anything that isn't 1 block high castle corridors." Overall, for what it's worth, Flash of the Blade X is a pretty decent way to kill some time. Given it's pretty short campaign along with it's price, I'd be silly to put this against the greatest of Retro FPS games. Its very clear that wasn't the mission statement for game, even if it does leave you with the feeling of missed potential. Honestly the most frustrating part of the game was the lack of mouse sensitivity adjustment in the settings, as it's at a awkwardly high setting by default with no way to edit it with the version of the engine this game uses. But for a base price of 3 measly dollars and even cheaper on sale, there's not too much to fuss about that's within reason.
Overall = 5/10
A very rudimentary but fun shooter with a simple story and a good ninja style. It has a good selection of weapons and music but the enemy types were similar and the easy difficulty offers almost no challenge. Having some stats or challenges such as kills / speed run / secrets would have been better, as it’s very short and won’t keep you playing for long.
