First time playing a Final Fantasy game. Nice graphics and music, but it feels like a chore with all the filler and padding. So much unnecessary time‑consuming stuff that contributes nothing but boredom.
Now I am become Manolo, the destroyer of panchitos.
All you had to do was remake the game with better graphics, a card game, and voice acting. And you fumbled.
Having only played OG FF7 last year I was very excited for this. Whilst the graphics and voice acting are great, I can't say the rest of the entire game is enjoyable. It has it's moments such as climbing over the slums post Church with Aerith. However the combat system, the design choices (see Intermission final boss), general flow of the game and pacing is questionable. I'm quite disappointed. I would not recommend to fans of the original game. Only if you're looking for a new and completely different experience and during a 75%+ sale
While I do have some problems with the pacing in the game, I generally enjoyed most of what the game has to offer and the combat is imo one of the better examples of doing a hybrid system even if it's more leaning into action stuff. This is technically my first FF7 game but I definitely can feel some stuff was just padded (like getting blocked on your objective so you need to find another way MANY TIMES, some puzzles here and there which is okay but it can be ridiculous at times since it's obvious they were made to extend the game time), and they can be annoying a lot of times. Overall, my rating is a shaky 7/10, but before I touch the Intergrade stuff, I'll do FF7 OG but not immediately.
Another corporate milking of cherished IP. Square Enix split final fantasy 7 into a trilogy and dilutes it with filler slop. This game only covers the original ~5 hours of gameplay until you leave midgar, but expanded to 20-40 hours through filler slopification. The FF7 remakes follow the same path as The Hobbit and Star Wars 7-9, a high budgeted attempt to extract money from a nostalgic fanbase that ultimately fails to deliver on the basics. The FF7 remakes epitomizes everything wrong with the modern trend of remonetizing classic content. The game is beautiful, obviously massive budget went into crafting a game that looks good. There are lots of chances to take a screen shot as you are forced to walk through a coerced angle to show a vista by pressing x to slip through a crack, but the game ends up being a massive letdown as you realize you will never get out of midgar. This game lacks the powerful story, exploration, and power scaling of game systems that made the original great. This is replaced with time wasting errands in the slums of midgar that have no impact or weight. Ultimately, this is a deeply insulting experience to play this game as a lifetime fan of final fantasy. It is deeply disheartening that even square enix has become a part of the corporate slopification of modern media and that the filler slopification only increases in the subsequent instalments of the remake. Furthermore, don't forget that they have released DLCs to fight the true "final boss" of this stunted and underdeveloped game. It's not a complete story, it's not a complete game, it doesn't live up to it's legacy, it doesn't even keep you occupied for a whole weekend (i got through it in under 20 hrs) It's not worth $60. Don't buy it for more than $10, its not worth that much any way you slice it.
Final Fantasy VII Remake – Am I Still Playing The Same Game?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ (5/10) The cutscenes are fantastic. They're full of emotion, movement, and some genuinely cinematic moments. You can tell a lot of effort went into the presentation. Unfortunately, the voice acting didn't land for me. It's not terrible, but it often crosses the line into being a little too over-the-top and, at times, downright cringey. It made it harder to take some of the more serious moments seriously. The combat also never clicked. Blocking and dodging feel inconsistent, and once an enemy lands a hit, your character can spend what feels like an eternity getting staggered and slapped around while you watch helplessly. Apparently my greatest ability was becoming a punching bag. Performance, at least, is excellent. The game runs great on both my Steam Deck and PC, so no complaints there. The story and lore were interesting enough to keep me going, but the acting kept pulling me out of it. Then there's the music. It starts off fine, but after a while it repeats so often that I started wondering if someone had accidentally left the same playlist on loop. Sometimes the music doesn't even match what's happening in the cutscenes. Nothing says "epic emotional moment" quite like what sounds like elevator music refusing to leave. One thing that genuinely annoyed me was how the game handles some of the later bosses. Before the second boss in Chapter 17, and again in Chapter 18, you're basically thrown into the fight without a proper chance to adjust your equipment or materia. So your first attempt often feels less like a boss fight and more like a scouting mission to figure out what you should have equipped in the first place. Now let's talk about the story. I genuinely have no idea what happened. I started by joining what felt like a tree-hugger resistance group fighting an electric company. Then I was fighting anime bodyguards, Cloud's mysterious hallucinations, flying dementors, giant portals, and mountain-sized bosses. Every few hours it felt like someone quietly swapped the game cartridge while I wasn't looking. Maybe if you're a long-time Final Fantasy fan, all of this makes perfect sense. As someone experiencing it for the first time, though, the lore, power scaling, and overall story were incredibly difficult to follow. It just isn't very newcomer-friendly. The biggest issue for me is that there are no real stakes. Everyone seems to have plot armor, and the game ends on a massive cliffhanger that basically says, "Go buy the next game if you want answers." Today... I'm good. Great presentation, confusing story, frustrating combat, and a cliffhanger ending that did more to sell the sequel than satisfy this one. My Recommendation: Buy if it is on sale. Or if you are a FF Fan
- Doesn't recognize MKB controls properly - No 21:9 support - Can't even maintain default 30 fps in cutscenes, drops to sub 20 Modern remake, folks. Refunding.
