Rename this game to Bloat Fantasy 69.
So, you'd think I was close to the end of the game 42 hours in at the time of writing this review. Well, I'm only as far as Gongaga and that's been turned into a massive over bloated area that was only a ten minute side quest in the OG. I'm barely halfway through the game! I know they needed to pad out the game to make it worth our while, however, Square Enix have gone too far and made the game frustratingly slow in terms of pacing with compulsory bosses that either weren't in the OG or were optional. On another point, they ruin Dyne's story. It was watered down due to reasons but then having a comical fight with Palmer after the emotional climax was too greater whiplash, tone deaf, and an insult to the OG. I will be honest, there are compelling story beats in this but the bloat has hit a point that fatigue is setting in. I would not recommend this game to a casual player and would insist you play the OG instead which is still the superior game in my opinion.
Trying to complete this game made me so angry I put up candles and starting chanting trying to put curses on the developers
I started this game with one simple mission: Stop Sephiroth. Save the planet. 60 hours later... Sephiroth is probably wondering if I died. Meanwhile, I've become the undefeated champion of a card game I didn't know existed, rescued enough chocobos to start my own bird sanctuary, climbed every mountain I could find, hunted monsters for pocket change, played the piano, raced birds, herded chickens, photographed wildlife, found enough crafting materials to open a hardware store, and solved problems for every NPC who looked at me for more than three seconds. The fate of the world? Yeah... I'll get to it. Eventually. Maybe. I've loved Final Fantasy VII since the original PlayStation, and I've played every version released. Somehow, Square Enix took one of my favorite games of all time and turned it into the greatest distraction simulator ever created. Every five minutes the game says, "Hey, you should probably go stop the silver-haired supervillain." Then another icon appears on the map. "...Okay, ONE more thing." Twenty hours later... "...Okay, NOW I'll go." The combat is incredible. The characters are even better than I remembered. The soundtrack had no business going this hard. The world is breathtaking. The amount of love poured into this game is obvious from the moment you leave Kalm. My only complaint? At one point I honestly forgot Sephiroth was the villain because Chadley wouldn't stop calling me every six minutes. 10/10. Sorry, Sephiroth. The planet can wait. I've got side quests.
This feels like Kingdom Hearts more than Final Fantasy. Shame, beautiful graphics doesn't help with level design and weak twist of the original story. Side quest feels like a chores, repetitive and boring.
they keep updating the game and it messes with mods even with all the updates it runs like crap on PC. what were they thinking with dynamic resolution and no option to turn that crap off? every damn update messes with every damn optimization mod
Outdated game design -- Filled with filler and bloated fetch quests. Its too bad that this is even associated with the original.
Incredibly annoying to play. The changes to combat and its systems feel pointless. I much preferred how building characters worked in Intergrade. The open world is insanely boring and the constant minigames are driving me insane. Runs a lot worse than Intergrade with constant stuttering even with pretty good specs. I'd really just watch a condensed playthrough or something. This really isn't worth your time.
.... Man I dont even care enough to leave a proper review. I'm five hours in. Never played the original. It's a timesink, and it just weighs you down with the sheer amount of just useless extraneous ♥♥♥♥ you can do. The idea of how much precious time of my single life on this good earth, that I'd have to invest in side quests, card games and *♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flower picking* to "experience the game to its fullest" is exhausting and overwhelming. I guess if you like a timesink, then this game is for you. Otherwise give it a pass. I hate openworld games atp.
If you think this is a good game, you are the problem.
