Far Cry 6 is a huge disappointment. It was advertised as a return to a gritty tropical setting such as the Rook Islands in Far Cry 3 and a special focus in guerrilla / asymmetric warfare like in Far Cry 2, yet the finished product delivers a poor mishmash of both.
I won't lie. I enjoyed some moments, and the gameplay is kind of the same as always. You can find *some* entertainment in this, but it's like reviewing slop as a culinary critic. Speaking of slop, what pisses me off the most in this game is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ storyline.
I am just appalled at how detached the plot is compared to the awesome worldbuilding of Yara. Yeah, the map is gorgeous and super well made, Ubisoft almost never misses on that. You have this brutal dictatorship where Gus Fring kills anyone he wants, where slaves die of cancer trying to harvest a drug that apparently cures it, mass graves below the lakes where bioweapons are made, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hanged people in the buoys surrounding the coastline, the works. You'd think people opposed to the regime would be these traumatized freedom fighters who are desperate for Anton Castillo's head. Instead, the plot follows an unserious, corporate friendly, Marvel-tier comedic format that throws every piece of worldbuiling out the window.
Take a shot every time a character says "Libertad", "Terrorista", "El Presidente" or "Pinga". The writing constantly regurgitates these words whenever it can, with the only scenes not worth skipping being the ones with Giancarlo Esposito, who high-key carries the entire plot on his shoulders. Also, why do guerrillas, famous for adopting covert combat techniques, wear bright-blue uniforms and symbols? Why is it that the only thing they are able to do without Dani, the protagonist, is paint grafitti on the street and cry? They seem more like a teenage street gang than an actual resistance movement. Seriously, it pisses me off how they handled the story. There are a few moments where you can really feel that they were trying to do something in there, but they are instantly overshadowed by corny, Marvel-esque dialogue and shenanigans. Only highlights I can think of are Juan "I'm shooting the kid" Cortez and El Tigre, who are the only two dudes in the entire story that had something interesting to say.
It's boring. It's just so boring. My immersion is constantly broken by the fact that animals are apparently resistant to armor piercing ammunition, and that I need to constantly change ammo types depending on what i'm trying to shoot. Good news is, you can mod this game to flush most of these poor gameplay decisions away. That's what I had to do to remotely enjoy this game, which says a lot. It also doesn't help that this game is just so EASY. Right from the start you're given infinite free heals, a free car with an ammo resupply, an NPC companion and a rocket launching backpack, which you can customize further along the way. What happened to progression? Also, gear-based skills and abilities blow. Bring back equipment crafting! The AI is insanely stupid, probably the worst AI ever in a Far Cry game. Capturing checkpoints and bases is kind of there, but it's nothing to write home about, mostly due to the AI, again. Side missions are not really engaging, and I only did a few of them for the achievements.
The DLCs are just whatever. Once you've played either Vaas, Pagan or Joseph once you've basically played all of them. Don't even bother with Lost Between Worlds, that ♥♥♥♥ puts you asleep faster than fentanyl.
Overall, the game is a 5/10, and that's being REALLY generous. Do you want a good Far Cry experience? Stick to literally ANY title before this one (yes, even Vengeance for the Wii is better than this).
