Thank you Throwback for helping get TXR online in Canada!
Extreme-G 2 is a futuristic combat racing title developed by Acclaim Cheltenham and published by Throwback Entertainment. Originally released during the late 1990s and later brought to Steam for modern audiences, the game remains a distinctive entry in the arcade racing genre thanks to its intense emphasis on speed, aggressive weapon-based competition, and imaginative science-fiction settings. Rather than pursuing realism, it embraces a vision of high-tech motorcycle racing where competitors tear across futuristic circuits at astonishing velocities while exchanging devastating attacks in a battle for first place. The game's most impressive feature is its extraordinary sensation of speed. From the moment a race begins, Extreme-G 2 delivers a relentless rush that few racing games can match. The futuristic bikes accelerate to incredible levels, creating a constant feeling that players are barely maintaining control as the scenery races past. This overwhelming pace is a defining aspect of the experience, transforming every corner, jump, and obstacle into a test of concentration and reflexes. The famous sonic boom effect generated at top speeds further enhances the excitement, making each race feel like a futuristic adrenaline ride rather than a conventional motorsport event. Track design plays a major role in keeping the experience engaging. The game offers a variety of environments that range from advanced metropolitan landscapes to underwater passages, industrial complexes, and exotic natural locations. These tracks are significantly wider and faster than many courses found in competing racers from the same era, allowing players to fully exploit the game's remarkable sense of speed. Each circuit introduces different hazards, shortcuts, and visual themes, ensuring that races rarely feel repetitive. The futuristic presentation gives the locations a unique personality and reinforces the game's science-fiction atmosphere. Combat mechanics provide another layer of depth beyond pure racing skill. Players can equip and deploy various weapons designed to hinder opponents and secure advantageous positions. Missiles, mines, and other offensive tools transform every race into a chaotic contest where survival and strategic aggression are just as important as taking corners efficiently. The combat system encourages players to remain aware of their surroundings, balancing offensive opportunities with defensive considerations. This blend of racing and vehicular combat creates a more dynamic experience than traditional racers that focus solely on speed. Vehicle selection also contributes to the game's replay value. The roster includes multiple futuristic bikes with distinct statistics affecting acceleration, handling, traction, durability, and overall performance. Some machines cater to players who prefer maximum speed, while others offer better control or stronger defensive capabilities. Learning the strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle becomes an important part of mastering the game. Unlockable content, including hidden bikes and additional characters, further rewards dedicated players who invest time into exploring everything the game has to offer. The audiovisual presentation reflects both the strengths and limitations of its era. While the graphics naturally show their age when compared to modern releases, they still succeed in conveying the futuristic world that the developers envisioned. Bright visual effects, imaginative vehicle designs, and creative environments help maintain the game's identity. The soundtrack deserves particular recognition, featuring energetic electronic music that perfectly complements the high-speed gameplay. The Steam release enhances the package by including soundtrack options, controller support, cloud functionality, and other conveniences that make the classic title easier to enjoy on contemporary systems. Despite its many positive qualities, Extreme-G 2 is not without shortcomings. The extreme speed that defines the game can occasionally become a source of frustration, particularly for newcomers who may struggle with the demanding handling model. Crashes can occur suddenly, and some sections require quick reactions that leave little room for error. The game's age is also evident in its menus, interface design, and overall presentation. Players accustomed to modern accessibility features, tutorials, and streamlined progression systems may find the experience less approachable than contemporary racing titles. Even with these limitations, Extreme-G 2 remains an entertaining and memorable arcade racer. Its commitment to delivering pure speed, combined with satisfying combat mechanics and imaginative futuristic tracks, gives it a character that still stands out years after its original release. While it may not have the polish of modern racers, it offers a level of intensity and excitement that continues to appeal to fans of classic arcade-style competition. For players seeking a nostalgic return to the era of futuristic combat racing or newcomers interested in exploring a unique piece of racing game history, Extreme-G 2 remains well worth experiencing.
I have a stiffy for the soundtrack(s). I just wiish they were at least 320kbps mp3 or FLAC.
i hate that you have to give either thumbs up or down, there is no middle ground for a review for a game just for nostalgia reasons i'll give it a thumbs up but let me tell you, the xbox controls are messed up press A to accelerate press X to use NOS (you literally have one thumb on a hand) press left bumper/shoulder button to use power up. left analog stick seems to be on point though. the trigger buttons should make you accelerate, we all know that! >:( you still have to use the keyboard for the main menu screens. that screenshot i took though, that body tea XD
Worth buying just for the amazing soundtrack.
This is a terrible port of a good game. Despite that, it is still a good game.
The Silent Hill of AG. Racing genre needs more goofy and eerie tracks like this. Kinda gets you grounded - Moffugas complaining about things in the newer games suddenly seem like a drop in the bucket. And surprisingly better sense of speed than some of em. Modify the controls to the latest modern standard inside the game just before picking the driver - not in the launcher navigating menus will still be keyboard bound. I like the option to pick the amount of laps to race from 1 to 11 and switch weapons on or off. Although, the latter you might want cause the AI just wipe each other out and it's therapeutic driving after that. Can't recommend for long-term play. More so a look-see at something odd.
Sometimes it disables keyboard input at the start of the race, this always happens when above the default resolution It does not work with my Series X controller, unless I use Steam input, however that also becomes disabled along with the keyboard The frame rate is locked at 30 fps, this makes it very unpleasant when turning or going through areas with lightning or flashing lights
