Disappointed by the launch state and further development. The studio makes one strange design choice after another. I see their vision but I really can't support it if it leads to empty, overly complex mechanics without effect and, which is worse to me, incredibly unhistorical or even insensible outcomes. The game feels sluggish all the time, even on a powerful machine. One might argue over that, but I hate the UI which is neither efficient nor fitting. The UI designers just don't know how to present the interface and its data in an aesthetically pleasing fashion that suits the historic setting. It's corporate-style buttons contrasted with brown backgrounds or overcrowded pictures with glaringly colourful text. What a mess! Just have a look at the government tab or a province overview. Or look at the cluttered top interface which is a space waste in the corners at the same time. Or, for Michelangelo's sake, better don't look at all. Unfortunately, the studio's priorities are off, one update after another. I'm not quite sure I like studio Tinto's approach under Johan's leadership and under Spain's sun. Instead of improving the abysmally bad performance or giving contextual content to the player in systems that actually matter, they crank out mid DLC and updates that, in years prior, would have been considered pre-launch polishing. The changes most important to me have been postponed this week for a year and a half. That's crazy. The studio always presents their "dynamic historic events" like a sacred cow in their posts. But I don't feel the impact of them. There is no intuitive or fun way of seeing the requirements for certain events or possibilities following in the next years. Even playing a country with a well-known history often feels like floating in empty history space – never knowing what comes next or what was before you. I can neither see a permanent plaque or overview somewhere with my diplomatic, military or economic achievements nor is there a mission tree where I could look up my choices and taken paths ... and I think that's what many players want. It's not necessarily the amount of flavour content but the impact and uniqueness of it. I want to remember a playthrough of, let's say, 50 hours! And the next one is not supposed to feel largely the same.
Everything is way too slow, and even in the base game, AI can't use most of the game mechanics. So on one hand, you can't really lose, but on the other hand, the snowballing is slowed as much as possible and not spliced up with interesting events. So it is a boring/boring situation.
I can barely be bothered to hit the launch button anymore, when I do I just look around at the map before playing a different PDX game instead. I am the target audience for the game and I can't even force myself to like it, huge failure.
The Devs have no interest in making EU5 fun in any way. Every week you have to deal with an "update" which means they found something that made the game fun and had to ruin it. You will never finish a singe run because of this. Thousands of hours in Paradox games and this is the only one I am officially giving up on. Do not buy this game. It is a waste of your time and will only lead to frustration.
Paradox has lost the plot. They can't release updates that actually fix the game. Every update is new features that poorly integrate with the rest of the game. Every DLC is empty and poorly implemented. The economy in this game is dysfunctional, the content in the game is barebones. Every nation plays the exact same way. And i can't even list all the issues. Someone in the chain of command has made very poor decisions that has cost this game any chance at recovering. Its a trash unplayable unfun game where you click a button to have an AI play it for you LITERALLY.
I spent 50 dollars for a laggy, slow, barely functional, and boring UI mess with a learning curve so esoteric I'm better off sticking to CK3 and VIC3. I might come back to this later when the game is in an more playable state but I'm not watching multiple hour plus long guides on youtube so I can understand how to play this mess of a game.
If my lost time and money can mean anything, let it mean that no one else buys this game. On realease I expected this game to do what EU4 (the previous game) acheived on release: - A functional Holy Roman Empire - no. instead there was a gaping void in central Europe. - A simple yet functional exploration system -no. it was seriously bugged. - An emotional connection to my realm/kingdom/empire - no. a pocket calculator has more charisma. - A visual interface that was usable and not too ugly - modders had to come to the rescue. - An audio interface that didn't set my teeth on edge - I turned down the volume. - A global map that works - ships should clearly sail through the ocean. - Reasonable Unit control and warfare - patroling vessels couldn't patrol, and just fell apart in the baltic sea. - Somewhat entertaining geopolitics - Nope. but growing fungus in real life can reward you with mushrooms. - A consistency to their vision - features have been patched in and out, with horribly mixed results. I'm beyond done with this game. I'm just angry.
Currently unplayable. Country starts in massive deficits and subjects revolt immediately. I started with France and less than a year all subjects revolt for 100k manpower while I have like 17k. I went from 403 hours to 0.8 in the last two weeks.
