this game is AMAZING. No regrets saying that.
After replaying the first chapter MANY times, as well as buying the supporter edition and unlocking bonus content, I feel the need to write an in depth review of it. First of all, the artstyle is just gorgeous man. Like genuinely the smallest of details like the moving texture on the characters to the 3D/2D hybrid stuff, it all just blends to create this like, perfect mix of something visually appealing while still being really experimental, and on that note, THIS GAME IS TRULY SOMETHING ELSE. People don't call this the weirdest game they've ever played for nothing man, holy hell. Even being an ENA fan from the webseries before I played the game, nothing could actually prepare me for what the hell this was. You could easily tell there's a lot of LSD Dream Emulator and Yume Nikki influence by just one playthrough of it. The gameplay itself is quite good as well. A first playthrough generally might take a couple hours just to solve the base puzzles (or maybe I'm stupid), but on replays they go by pretty quickly and it's never like, a chore to play this game, if you know what I mean? Like, yes, there's two routes you can take, both resulting in the same ending, and no there's no real incentive to replay them if you don't care about achievements or anything, but it's like, why not? Why not replay the game to see the other route? It doesn't take that much time. Why not buy the supporter edition and support the incredible talent behind this game? Replaying the game to find the dogs isn't that hard, and it doesn't cost that much. Why not try for every achievement (except the one where you jump across the bridge on the white river without the humanboard that one sucks)? MOST of them aren't hard. Like, this is a VERY well crafted experience to play. And THE SOUNDTRACK DUUUUUUUDE. Now I make music myself so I might have a liiiiiittle bit of bias here, but oh my god this game's soundtrack is an absolute masterclass. Oliver Buckland, METAROOM, and everyone else involved absolutely killed it on the OST. Like I genuinely relisten to it so much you do not understand bro. The music and the gameplay and the art, somehow they just flow to make this atmosphere dude. Like there's a way to how this game FEELS. Like it's off, but it's also not. It's goofy and silly and all that, but there's something really unsettling and off-putting to it a lot. And I find it more in the Purge Event route personally. Going through the Lost Village and the area right before the Purge Event with all the watcher children, it's just, unsettling in a way. But areas like the Uncanny Streets feel more goofy with the amazing cast of characters and their respective voice actors. Everybody on the VA team nailed it and I loved everyone's performance. I am incredibly excited to see where Dream BBQ progresses next and it has undoubtedly become my second favorite game of all time just from this chapter alone. I cannot wait to experience the next chapter, and I am willing to pay ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY just to see Joel and everyone else's amazing craftsmanship put into play. So yes, I recommend ENA: Dream BBQ, and while you're at it, I highly encourage you to support the game in any way you can. We live in a scary time for real art, with the whole AI crisis and whatnot, so seeing something like this in this day and age is truly special. So thank you to Joel G. and the incredible team behind this game for making something truly special. I cannot wait for the future :)
