The only bad thing about this game, is that there is nothing else that will feel like it when you are done with it. If you are on the edge thinking about buying it, DO IT. I will say that it is a very challenging game, but when you win, its very satisfying. 11/10
if you like ants you will love this game
Pirated this game, then bought it the next day. The studio deserves my money 10/10
Super, Super!
Summary: stopped playing (3h) / not sure if continuing in the future Empires of the Undergrowth is a seemingly very authentic Horde-RTS game about ants with similarities to something like Dungeon Keeper, where you are building your hive that lets you spawn your ants to overcome the challenges. I stopped my playthrough because i got reminded why i have been playing RTS games in the past (building, exploration and story). While this definitely features a nice narration about ants and i can see a lot appeal to the game as a whole, it is in a way more like a challenging/fast-paced RTS than like story and certain themes etc. Pros: + fitting music + authentic and good voice acted narration + seemingly realistic insect behaviour + challenging horde-based RTS, the difficulty actually matches the description (hard can be actually hard if you dont know the game) + varying levels that each have their own intuitive challenges + good and satisfying upgrade mechanic for rooms + kind of "meta-progression" in a home level with its own challenges and things to build and do Cons: - seemingly not that much variety of rooms and and units (not sure if this gets much better later on) - contrast is a bit weak sometimes (especially differentiating between filled and dug-out tiles) - graphics maybe could be more "crisp" sometimes - if you lose a lot/most of your army, it can be very hard to gain enough food again to recover before you get overrun (could be seen as a skill issue or the learning curve, although other RTS can be more forgiving, especially in single player) Verdict: 8/10 (good fun) Spiders ate my ant hive.
Overall a good game. I am roughly halfway through the campaign and I should fairly warn that there are several instakill mechanics which are atypical for most RTS. I haven't decided how I feel about it yet. The campaign isn't a true RTS past "Chapter 2" where it switches a bit more into a puzzle with RTS elements. I am currently playing on hard, there are two higher difficulties which I doubt are enjoyable for 95% of people.
