This is easily one of the best RTS games out there. It really is like controlling an ant colony as the ants do not react to changes in your pheromone markers telling them to go places instantly. Instead, it takes them a few seconds to receive the new message and change course as it would in real life. The system of levels that allow you to experience different species of ants and different scenarios is well implemented. It allows you to master new ants while incentivizing you to do so by rewarding you with resources to build up your main colony, which is put to the test. There are also many degrees of difficulty as well a challenge mode for each level, which adds to how re-playable the game is. After completing the main story on easier difficulties, I am going back and completing each level on the hardest difficulty while doing all of the achievements, which has extended my gameplay by a lot. Truly a well done game.
A fun RTS. The difficulty is very accessible even for those not familiar with the genre. The base game loop is exactly what you’d expect from an RTS: You build an economic workforce, you build a military, you gather resources and fight enemies. That’s not where this game shines. What makes this game for me is how the dev managed to nudge you into building what looks like a realistic ant nest: There’s bonuses to be had for building separate chambers for separate concerns, there’s a malus for building everything in the way. The notifications is also very much to my liking. Instead of a fanfare or a ‘the enemy is attacking’ call when … well the enemy is attacking, you get a BBC narrator explaining “The ants are under attack. They must protect the larvae.“ A very nice execution of a base necessity. Even the way the ants move makes it look very much like a buzzing ant hive. There are some minor issues I would’ve liked addressed, but they’re not terrible: - Ants move randomly around their assigned post. This causes some ants to notice enemies before others, which leads to only half your battallion attacking. That’s a bit… meh. - I wish there was a ‘patrol’ option to secure a whole resource gathering caravan rather than having to manually move the military where it’s needed along the road.
Empire of the Undergrowth is a strategy and colony management game where you build and control an ant colony. The game features several ant species, each with unique abilities and behaviors, while also teaching players about how real ants live and interact with their environment. There are multiple game modes to enjoy, including the campaign, skirmish, arena, and a free-play/test mode. The game also offers plenty of challenging achievements, making it a great choice for achievement hunters and players looking for a real challenge. My Opinion: This game made me rage... a lot. But it also gave me plenty of satisfying moments and a huge dopamine rush whenever I completed a difficult challenge. I'm an achievement hunter, so collecting every achievement—even the hardest ones—is my main goal. Overall, if you enjoy base building, troop management, and resource management games, I highly recommend Empire of the Undergrowth. It's challenging, rewarding, and a lot of fun. Rating: 8/10 Tip: Watch tutorials before attempting the more difficult levels, especially if you're going for achievements. They can save you a lot of time, frustration, and failed attempts.
It shows a vast variety of ant species. Play as anything in custom scenarios or take on the main campaign. Nice game if you like the vast reign and mass murder you can cause as a ruler of an ant colony
If it was more of a grand-strategy game with less emphasis on control/resources then it would be great. But as-is it's like playing an RTS that needs micro-managing, except all you can do is give vague suggestions and cross your fingers. * Resources are always tight and non-renewable, but you'll always waste a bunch since you don't have enough control. Your orders only apply to groups and the group could be split across the map. I frequenly had cases where I needed to retreat, but disabling combat would cause half my squad caught up in minor fights elsewhere (on the way to the main waypoint) to also die * You can only given vague orders and it takes a few seconds for it to be followed, but a lot of the time the game seems to want me to sneak around things etc. which requires more control as currently they'll just auto-path where I don't expect etc. Combined with the resources, I lost a few games and gave up because of this * Unnecessary time sinks. Missions take ~1hr and you can't save. Which might be tolerable, except there are events you don't know ahead of time and lots of downtime, so you might play 75% of a mission to then get stomped by a random centipede etc., so you have to repeat it all again
10/10 si de por si ya me gustaba ver a Vicio One More Time jugarlo, ahora que lo puedo probar me encanta aún más, vale totalmente la pena
I have played this game for more than a bad player spends beating dark souls and can say it is a great game. the only thing i would enjoy more about this game would be if it was multiplayer.
