If I wanted someone to ragebait me online for trying to be friendly, I would join a discord server.
This one hit different right from the start. The whole game is built around an old AIM-style chat interface, and that alone brought back a wave of nostalgia I wasn't expecting from a game. The story sneaks up on you. What starts as casual back-and-forth chatting slowly turns into something more layered, about growing apart, missed timing, and choices that feel small in the moment but add up. The typing indicators, the away messages, the awkward pauses before a reply, all of it makes the conversations feel real. Emily herself feels relatable in a way that's hard to fake. The dialogue options never feel like you're picking a "good" or "bad" choice, just choices that feel true to how people actually talk, especially over messaging. It's short, sure, but it doesn't feel gimmicky once you're in it. The format that seems like a novelty at first ends up being exactly why the story lands the way it does. It hit especially hard for me personally, since I've made friends online before and watched that connection quietly fade over time, and this game captured that feeling almost too well. It's also free, and honestly, I'm not complaining. For the best experience, play it with some songs from that era playing low in the background. That's how I played it, and it made the whole thing feel even more immersive. I highly recommend it, especially if that sounds familiar to you too. Rating: 8/10. Short, simple, and surprisingly emotional. Worth the hour it takes for free.

A branching narrative that relates to the options you pick - I found that what I wanted to say wasn't always there and some choices seemed to end up at the same next part of narrative (so it feels as if most of your choices don't matter), but that is the nature of designing every possible path that someone could take for free. It is carried by early 2000s nostalgia
I guarantee this story happens to a lot of people. Regret always comes late. The world was just passing and leaving you behind. 7.5/10

a simple, charming experience that works better than it should. easy to enjoy and surprisingly relaxing to spend time with. the story is fantastic
I played this on my Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (8th Gen Intel Core i5-8350U, 32GB RAM) running Linux Mint LMDE 7, and it ran flawlessly. No compatibility issues whatsoever. Emily is Away is a love letter to the early 2000s internet era. The branching narrative gives you some agency, but the story ultimately follows a fairly linear path. You'll make dialogue choices that affect the tone of conversations, but don't expect radically different endings on your first playthrough. My biggest complaint? It's just too short. I finished the story in about an hour, and while that hour was enjoyable, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was more of a demo than a complete game. This makes perfect sense once you realize the developer's other games (Emily is Away Too and Emily is Away <3) continue and expand upon this universe. Think of this as the opening chapter of a larger story. If you're looking for a quick, free dose of 2000s nostalgia with good writing and a relatable story, give it a try. Just go in knowing it's a brief experience that serves as a foundation. Worth your time? Absolutely, especially since it's free. Just manage your expectations regarding length.
Game was actually kind of depressing near the end but honestly I barely paid attention to the plot. Easy 100% achievements in about 45min.
