"Dungeon Brawlers" is a rather mediocre student project from the latter day saints over at Brigham Young University in Utah. This year the students made a top down 3D rendered "party brawler". As usual for BYU the 3D modeling and animations are top notch, but nobody wanted this kind of game on Steam, so understandably it failed to capture any interest. What do you do in the game? Nothing, there's no players. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Insultingly, the developer insists that you should play this with a console peasant children's toy gamepad instead of KB+M. You cannot play this without a console peasant children's toy. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're designing games for. It's the responsibility of the developer to ensure the game runs well on the platform they're selling it on, with the primary peripherals that PC gamers use. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.

well it's not bad
10/10 one of the best indie games i've ever played. Great character design, fun brawling, lackluster menu, sates my unyielding desire for vengeance, colorful graphics, and overall a great time. Some of the weapons are pretty op tho

Dungeon Brawlers is a free-to-play multiplayer arena game developed by BYU Animation and published by BYU Center for Animation. Designed with local multiplayer at its core, the game delivers a fast-paced fantasy brawling experience where players compete to become the undisputed ruler of the dungeon. Instead of relying on an elaborate narrative or deep role-playing mechanics, it focuses on accessible combat, quick rounds, and friendly competition that is easy to pick up but remains entertaining over multiple sessions. The gameplay centers on four-player battles inside compact dungeon arenas where survival depends on quick reflexes, strategic positioning, and making the best use of whatever weapons are available. Rather than equipping players with permanent loadouts, the game encourages everyone to search the battlefield for different armaments, ranging from traditional melee weapons to more unusual ranged options. This constant hunt for equipment keeps every match dynamic, as players must adapt to changing circumstances instead of repeating the same tactics. Each playable character also features a unique special ability, adding personality to the roster while creating opportunities for different playstyles and team strategies. One of the game's standout mechanics is the battle for the Cyclops' Eye, which introduces an additional objective beyond simply defeating opponents. Players willing to take the risk of claiming this powerful artifact are rewarded with a devastating ability capable of turning the tide of battle. This feature creates moments of tension throughout each match, forcing participants to decide whether to focus on direct combat or temporarily shift their attention toward securing a valuable advantage. It adds an enjoyable layer of strategy that prevents the gameplay from becoming a straightforward elimination contest. Dungeon Brawlers also structures its matches around a score-based progression rather than a single-round victory. Competitors continue fighting until someone reaches the required score to earn the title of King of the Dungeon, giving every participant multiple opportunities to recover after setbacks. This format keeps the action flowing while encouraging players to remain engaged throughout the match. For those without a full group of friends available, AI-controlled opponents help fill empty slots, allowing the game to remain playable even during solo sessions or smaller gatherings. Visually, the game embraces a bright cartoon-inspired style that complements its lighthearted tone. The colorful environments and expressive character animations make it easy to follow the action even when the arena becomes crowded with attacks and special abilities. Although the graphics are relatively simple compared to larger commercial productions, the artistic presentation demonstrates polish and charm, reflecting the animation expertise behind the project. Sound effects provide satisfying feedback during combat, while the energetic soundtrack supports the game's fast pace without becoming distracting. The game's biggest limitation lies in its dependence on local multiplayer. While AI opponents provide an alternative, the experience clearly shines brightest when several human players share the same room. Those expecting extensive online multiplayer features, deep progression systems, or a lengthy single-player campaign may find the available content somewhat limited. Likewise, the selection of arenas and gameplay modes prioritizes replayable party sessions rather than long-term progression or customization. Despite these shortcomings, Dungeon Brawlers succeeds in delivering exactly the type of experience it promises. Its straightforward controls, varied weapons, character-specific abilities, and objective-driven combat combine to create an entertaining multiplayer title that values accessibility without sacrificing competitive fun. The free-to-play model makes it especially appealing for players looking for a casual couch multiplayer game that friends can immediately enjoy together. Rating: 7/10
