Drill Bird is a charming, micro drilling / mining game. In this game you control a bird with a drill for a beak. Your bird drills down into an obscure planet uncovering ore. This ore allows you to upgrade your bird to venture further down. Surprises await. The game took just over 1 hour to complete. + The game is priced well. + Beautiful pixel art mini cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game. + The music and sound effects are beautiful and soothing. + Surprise ending. - The game is a bit too short and simple. - There are not many ways to upgrade your character. Very simple mining game. Quite soothing to relax for an hour. Overall: 7/10
Short and not so difficult, but quite challenging and fun if you try to get all the achievements. This is a cute short digging platformer game, it seems most similar to SteamWorld Dig 1-2 in this subgenre, but it is much smaller in scope. You are a bird who digs up ore to feed it to an egg (I don't quite understand how that works, but ok!). The game loop of digging up stuff and taking it all back to the surface is very satisfying and the birds are sweet; the whole thing is just put together really nicely. The game takes 1-2 hours to complete - my playtime was closer to 2 because I went for some of the optional achievements, but I didn't do the speedrun ones. I'd say it is a cross-recommendation with the SteamWorld Dig games - if you liked those, you'll have a fun short break with this one too; and if you liked this one, but would like something bigger, there you go (SteamWorld Dig 2 is a full-fledged metroidvania). Technical section: I played on the Steam Deck docked to the TV with a PS4 controller, and didn't have any issues, but this game should probably run on anything that can run the Steam client. "Is this a metroidbrainia?" section: No, but almost... There are some reveals that the game explicitly tells you about, but they could've been found via a process of discovery or focused puzzles. I am still waiting for someone to make a digging metroidbrainia! ___ Source of the game: Bought with my own money (Steam summer sale)
fast and simple game, not much thinking except the platforming.
fantastic little game with a fun and satisfying gameplay loop. where this really excels though is atmosphere. i always love when even a small game like this can get you hooked on the world around you through excellent use of music, sound fx, and creative level design. this is proof that a game can be compelling from the first second even with a more simplistic visual style/limited tools. all the secrets to find here left me very pleasantly surprised every time. i hope this dev makes more games with this exact design philosophy - where mystery and exploration are at the forefront.
cute bite-sized little puzzle-platformer
Drill bird make me reallll happy :) when i grow up i wanna be just like drill bird
A fun little experience with fun game mechanics and controls. Got 100% of the ores on my first go! Overall very well designed. Really appreciated the inclusion of the flowers. Made climbing up much more enjoyable. Liked the choice of colours and the overall visual style too. Music's fitting for what the game is, not too in your face, but not too ambient either, reminded me a lot of Minecraft's soundtrack at times. Thank you so much for the key, it was an honour to play this! :)
Purchased for 2,39 euros. This game is short but fun. It's an extremely lean and trimmed down representation of a survival platformer. You collect resources, earn experience points, level up your skills and explore the environment while dealing with its perils and puzzles. It's simple and limited in scope, but that's the point. The map is not randomly generated, but the achievements facilitate replayability, because they force you to engage with the mechanics in different ways, which makes you appreciate the love and craft that went into this game.
Drill Bird is a little game about a little bird who drills. The designs of the world and player character are charming. The gameplay is rather simple, but still satifying. A good hour or two of gameplay and doesn't overstay its welcome. If you want a short but sweet experience and a wholesome ending, would recommend!
