i wanted to enjoy this but its sooooo boring
The one and only Dragon's Dogma, there's no other games like it besides the other Dragon's Dogma games, and even then, they're all missing that something something that Dark Arisen has. If you're a freak for both action games, and open world RPGs, you're never going to find a better middle ground. You kind of have to be a weird autistic pervert to enjoy this game, but if you are, it will quickly become one of your favorites. (I have way more playtime than it seems, I had this game on the PS3)
Picked this up for cheap on the summer Steam sale after hearing really good things as well as that the reliable Capcom developed this series. In short the game’s combat and environment designs are great, the story is there but I felt like it wasn’t that interesting, and limited access to fast travel causes the back and forth traversal to feel repetitive over long stretches. For combat stats you get to start by choosing either melee, ranged or mage then later as you level up you get to upgrade to stronger classes of those roles or hybrids of each as well as unlock knew skill to use, equipment is also here and upgradable by using materials you find around the world. Movement and attacks in combat feel snappy and fluid although too much freedom comes at the cost of precision as there’s no lock on to target button causing certain boss fights where you need to target certain body parts more difficult then they should. This game does host a party of 4 and can be played in multiplayer but when playing alone you can you use other player’s characters as “pawns” controlled by AI in your party to fill the gaps. Like I said earlier in the story is there but it’s a simple hero chosen one story with not much character development or anything of real interest as I only played through the main quests maybe some of the side content offers more interesting stories. I do have to commend the great soundtrack as well as how all the game’s dialogue is voiced even if some accents sound silly sometimes. The villages, buildings and environments are detailed looks great even with dated graphics, traversing through everything is a joy to see the first time but after having to go back and forth multiple over these long distances does feel boring since there you can only fast travel when using a limited consumable item aside from the main city. It is also to be mentioned that there is also a whole epilogue/post game that offers a greater challenge and extra story that will probably double game from what I read as well as the Dark Arisen DLC expansion content. All in all I was very happy with this game despite sounding critical about some features that are more modern quality of life issues than anything else, the combat, environment, and soundtrack are more then enough for a good time in this gameplay first, story second RPG.
dogma balls
Terrible, unplayable after getting used to Dragons Dogma 2 first, would never recommend.
One of my favourite games of all time, the freedom this game offers is unlike anything. You can kill God, become God, then on New Game + kill yourself and become God in your place and then do it all again and again, toiling against fate, but never able to escape your destiny. My personal favourite thing about it is your portcrystals carry into NG+, and the game even has a Speedrun Mode to encourage you to break it, and with portcrystals carrying over through NGs you can beat an entire playthrough of the game in under an hour with the right setup. Bitterblack Isle is the best chalice dungeon like content out there, mogging even Fromsoft while retaining the deep, japanese hack n slash RPG combat unique to DD. Shame DD2 sucked balls.
Today, this game decided to stop working. I did troubleshooting for 2 hours but eventually got it fixed (the issue was the DirectX 9.0 incompatibility with my pc in case your game is also having trouble). I think every single wasted second of that troubleshooting was absolutely worth it. This game is addictive and, for the most part, runs perfectly well on my basic laptop. In the era of AAA open world slop, this game is a blast from the past and a surprising diamond in the rough.
