This game is hot garbage and I cannot believe people actually would enjoy it. Do you like wasting your time? If so, this game is for you. Example: Getting a "Perfect" craft wastes 15 seconds of your time from the moment you're done crafting to when you regain control of the character/menus. I'm not joking. Crafting takes an insanely long time in this game and with the amount of stuff you craft, that's a lot of wasted time. So. Much. Wasted. Time. I easily wasted an hour or two of my life JUST WAITING for crafting completions - and I am probably under-estimating that time. Also, weird jankyness with running? Like - running full speed, then for no reason at all whatsoever, random slowdowns. It became SUPER annoying. Also, you get a mount! But you cant mount most places. Literally. Of everywhere you can go, you can mount maybe 20% of the time. Everywhere else you SHOULD be able to mount, but can't? For some arbitrary reason? Dunno....like I said, hot garbage. I got this game done in about 80 hours, but it could have easily taken 50-60 if there wasn't so much fluff involved. Game studios need to understand the difference between filler and content. This game's filler-to-content ratio is absurd. Run away from this game. Save yourself the headache and just watch highlights on YouTube. You ARE NOT missing anything by passing on this. I loved the Dragon Quest remakes (1, 2, 3, 7) but this game is by no definition a "Definitive Edition" of anything but hot garbage. What a disappointment.
the most brain dead game I have ever played, from the gameplay to the story and character characterization. if its your first gdr you will love it, otherwise you will lose i.q. if you play it
I can't stomach this one anymore - I've been trying to beat this game ever since it came out. The story writing goes from really great main story beats to complete intern-level drivel. I got whiplash going from story beat to story beat. Once I realized that it wasn't going to change no matter how many hours I sunk into it waiting for it to 'get better', I decided to move on. I watched the million cutscenes on YT and....except for the final 2 mins of the true ending, I honestly didn't miss much. I wont spoil anything, but the story mechanic of Act 2 and 3 is so lame, and how act 3 impacts act 2, sigh. Other quick thoughts - the music is fine but forgettable (they reuse so many songs, it honestly feels like there are 12 songs in the game), the combat is what we have come to expect from DQ after 8. I wish they would have put in a FF button or something or allow text to be sped up - it just drags from a time perspective. I also have to mention how much Dragon Ball is ripped off throughout this game. I cant recommend this game, everyone's backlog is massive at this point, go play something else.
more mixed than negative, but I can't say the time I spend with this game was worth it. Would have probably been a fun 40 hour game, but boy everything just stretches on far too long. If you want something purely for playtime it's decent, but if you're like me and want a well told story or engaging gameplay I can't recommend it.
I never played any of the dragon quest games before but i decided to try this one and it is honestly way better than i thought it would be it was cute and challenging.
Honestly its some nasty slop, the game basically plays itself, the dialogue is obnoxious as hell with its over the top Cockney accents, the music is just generic and repetitive trumpets and you can't really go off the beaten path ever. If Toriyama didn't do the character designs I would have said this game really has no redeeming qualities, I see all the time people saying "Aww the game is comfort food, it isn't supposed to be hard" but I feel like the issue is that it's not engaging at all regardless of difficulty. The game feels like its on autopilot at all times and even if the battles are easy if there was some sort of complexity to enjoy I might be able to recommend it on aesthetic and systems alone but as things stand it feels like a game for developmentally challenged children although I'm sure even they would prefer to play something deeper lol.
This is one of my favorite games. I've played it all the way through 5 times now and have purchased it on switch, playstation and now PC. Just a great entry in the franchise.
One of the best turn based RPGs I've ever played. Loved the story, the characters, the world, and it got me hooked on the series.
The most JRPG ever made. Full disclosure, this is my first DQ game since 1 and 2. The remasters, not the remakes. What you have here is the most traditional JRPG I've played in decades. It is party based. It is turn-based. There is no ATB gauge, no dodges or parries, The most modern mechanics are the crafting, the skill system, and the open-world-with-guardrails design. It's like this is a remake of an unreleased game in '95 with updated graphics. Is it good? Yes, I can say without a doubt it's good. I'd have a hard time saying much about DQ11 is great though. Act 1 is basically just you trying to get to the worldtree for some reason. The highlight is the characters. They show actual growth and are all extremely likable. None of the main cast is annoying or tenuous, which is an achievement given the length of this game. The music, or lack thereof, really makes this game feel as long as it is. Even if it is all high quality. Act 2 is when the game starts. The plot is... less complex. There really isn't one for the first like, 20 hours. Once act 2 hits you get an evil bad guy who wants to destroy the world. It's extremely underwhelming after so long. You could finish E33 in the time it takes to get an actual plot in DQ11. The cities are all distinct, but it's because they're all caricatures of a JRPG town. There's the Japan town, where they live under a volcano and speak in haiku. There's the middle-east town in the desert with horse racing. There's the snow town with vikings and an ice witch. Yawn. Act 3 is when you say "Okay, I think I've seen enough." The difficulty is a huge issue. The non-boss monsters are zero threat throughout the entire game. They're all just padding. The bosses, on the other hand, are pretty good. There's only a few where you can just ignore the mechanics. "Turn on the hard mode," you say. Well, that fixes the trash mobs. But then the bosses are so overtuned you're just waiting for a blessing from RNGsus. Again: this is an extremely traditional JRPG. Other than levels and dice rolls, you have very little influence over anything. I turned off hard mode just before act 2 and I only regret not turning it off sooner. I cannot understate how LONG this game is. I have 77 hours on this game and I just started the final act. There's another 30 or 40 hours ahead of me that I will not see. That includes the tockle retro 2D world that appears to be a complete waste of time in my opinion. Maybe if you're a DQ superfan you'd get more out of it. The big selling point of this game is simply the tone. If you want and endless amount of a cozy, characterful JRPG, DQ11 will take you well over 100 hours to see everything. Will it be quality? Will it change the way you look at the genre? Will it even ask you to pay attention? Can you play it drunk as a skunk or high as a kite without any impedance? You have to ask yourself what you want out of a game like this and how much time you'd really like to invest in it.
7/10 - A good game held back by outdated game mechanics Pros: - solid graphics that will age well since it relies on Akira Toriyama's anime art style instead of trying to achieve realism - Likeable (if a bit 2-dimensional) characters - Cool attack animations - Amazing music - Some dark and emotionally plot beats in Act 2 Cons - Combat mechanics are a a bit basic when compared newer JRPGs - Gambling mini-games suck! RNG is awful - Grinding/farming for materials to craft stronger gear get tedious and boring after a while; a few materials can only be obtained by RNG. which one again. is BAD! - Fights can get repetitive, especially by Act 3 - Only select armor and gear can change the characters' appearances - Inventory menu is super basic; very limited options in sorting them
