Having played the other Dragon Age games, this was a real disappointment. Good: - The gameplay is pretty good if you're looking for an action game. - The skill trees mean that you actually feel the progression and get to lean different combos and styles over time. - Being able to respec abilities without having to go to a trainer or buy a talent reset is great, but it would have been better if you could have it memorize certain presets. Bad: - It's nothing like the party-based games that all the previous games in the series were shaped around. - Your companions are mostly present so that they can either A) heal you or B) set you up with "primers" and "detonations" every 30 - 45 seconds. - The story writing is awful. You don't have any really significant choices. Solas justification for tearing down the veil seems well founded based on the plot and evidence from Inquisition, but Veilguard pretty much ignores all of that.
It would have made much more sense for you to have an option at the end to A) tear down the veil, B) have spent effort to find an alternative, or C) bind Solas to the veil (as is currently your only option.
- The dialog is atrocious. You've got a choice between the "getting along", "joking", and "brash" dialog choices. All of the joking options make you sound like bad marvel dialog. - The game is tagged LGBTQ+, but if that was actual goal then they utterly failed. They picked your companion Taash as a token non-binary character but made them rude, socially awkward, and generally unlikable. That doesn't really change even after you finish the whole line of Taash's companion quests. If this was genuinely an attempt at representation then it completely failed. - The companion characters all feel hollow and like they don't actually bring much benefit as a companion. There isn't anything you can do to significantly degrade your relationship with them, cause them to leave, or even avoid recruiting them in the first place. The romance is likewise pretty empty. - A lot of the cutscenes make little to no physical sense. Characters will end up in places or wholly new locations without any sense of how they got there or explaining how they got out of a situation. - The art style is very cartooney. All of the darkspawn look like caricatures of themselves. - Harder modes aren't more challenging by nature of enemies being smarter or using new abilities. They're mostly just tougher and you've got smaller reaction windows. It's harder, but not in a satisfying way. - A more minor nitpick, but ranged parries are extremely unreliable. When you try to parry your character does a sort of duck kind of animation and sometimes that causes the attack to just miss your character even if you previously were warned it would hit you. This especially happens if you're not at the same vertical height as your attacker or their attack makes any kind of significant arc or travel.
I was an avid fan of this series when I was younger, to the point where I'd listened to the companion banter so often that I could recall the dialogue verbatim. To say that I was incredibly disappointed with Veilguard would be an understatement. It felt like a drudge to play through, and the only reason I did was because I wanted to see how the story wrapped up. The companions, the writing, the world-building.... all of it was so bland and unremarkable. It's such a sharp contrast from previous titles in the DA series. The lore and characters from previous games seemed sanitized/watered down and for the bulk of the game, I did not actually feel like the main character/team was faced with a world-ending catastrophe (or a team competent enough to deal with it, for that matter). I know Mass Effect 3 received much criticism, but at least it made me buy into what was at stake.
I haven't played the game in awhile but while scrolling through my library I saw the game title and it brought back such upsetting memories of this game's awful writing it compelled me to write this review nearly 2 years since my attempted playthrough.
nope... I've wanted to write a full review but this game is not worth even that. it has nothing to do with dragon age... its not a dark fantasy. script is written by an edgy teenager a I absolutely despise the cartoon-ish look of EVERYTHING! well back to origins I go
Honestly just compare this game to Baldur's Gate 3... If BG3 was a well crafted steak dinner at a Michelin restaurant, this game is more like potato salad at the company pot luck... It's there, sure, and some people are gonna enjoy it, but it's not gonna take any risks and it definitely won't be that memorable.
Took a perfectly good CRPG and gradually, installment after installment, turned it into a looter shooter. Genuinely felt like I was playing Destiny 2 a lot of the time. I'm a queer and even I hated the LGBT content in this game. I'm taking the word "non-binary" away from Bioware. Why is a fantasy barbarian using modern queer identity labels suddenly? Why is Isabela lecturing my queer Rook on the correct way to recover from misgendering someone? Also why is she giving THE WORST advice ever? Why would I want someone to get down and give me 20 in front of everybody and make a giant scene to make themselves feel less like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for misgendering me? Was there a single trans person in the writer's room for this scene? Why are these characters acting like 'found family' the second they unpack their bags at the lighthouse? Because you know that's what the fans are gonna write fic about so you wanna fuel the fandom fires? Stop trying to pre-empt fandom content. Stop trying to INCORPORATE fandom content into the game's actual writing. AO3 fics are not writing feedback. Thanks a lot for killing the Dragon Age franchise by trying to force it into a live service nobody wanted or asked for, TWICE.
Ruined years of wordbuilding for what feels like Ao3 self-insert low rate fanfic of a trans person having issues with their mom. Apart from that, I tried really hard to play the game and have fun, but I feel like I'm watching power rangers cartoon and not leading a team meant to save the world. Love the universum, absolutely hate what they did to it.
i played through veilguard twice on console and am now picking it up on steam after almost two years. i've been a huge dragon age fan since origins, i waited 10 years for veilguard and i just have to say i really enjoyed the conclusion to the series! of course theres pros and cons to the gameplay loop, writing and characters, but overall, for me, this is the perfect ending for such a long winded story. i feel like you can't really make everyone happy with such a huge fanbase and that's okay. it's definitely not a perfect game, but it has such an amazing soundtrack, visuals and emotional storytelling! The Dragon Age games really changed over the years but i don't actually mind, since now each game is unique and has replayable features to enjoy.
Good overall game but bad Dragon Age title. Good graphics and optimization, but some characters look a bit out of place in DA game.. Choices from older games almost don't exist, and only 2 or even 1 truly matters. Combat was okay when playing rogue. Tits were oddly tiny lol Still there is a lot of content and 3-4 missions were pretty good, also beautiful landscapes and environments. Not really ''woke'' enough.. Cyberpunk had more :/
