(Very light spoilers ahead) I would've played Desktop Explorer all in one go through an evening if I wasn't the tiniest bit conscious of my sleep. I got quite addicted to it. The puzzles are very well balanced and paced, and the three major parts to the story offer up a change to the previous without feeling too out of place (like Inscryption cough cough). I understood the broad strokes of the story easily and its content felt not as trope-y as it could've been. Desktop Explorer is incredibly immersive. The sound design, the music, the way the game constrains and expands what you can do in a way that really benefits the puzzles... I streamed some of the game to my partner and they got the vibe immediately. There were moments I laughed out loud with some little jokes, and I was always excited to find something new, even if it was just flavour. My least favourite aspect was the short length of the later parts, it felt like the developer ran out of time. Some out-of-the-box thinking moments I can imagine could feel annoying to people here for the story or horror elements. Speaking of, horror elements in my opinion were quite light, which matched my preferences but couldn't for others. Overall, Desktop Explorer's an excellent adventure puzzle game, and I would probably put it in the top 5 of similar games I've played, like Storyteller, Blue Prince, the Case of the Golden Idol, and Return of the Obra Dinn (try those out, btw).
Amazing. Highest possible recommendation. Brilliant concept. Emergent gameplay. Engaging lore. I have not completed yet, but I am fully immersed. On the topic of emergence, I had one suggestion: The game would be more emergent if more Win 95 era OS features had been implemented (e.g. dragging and dropping, open with, etc.) which could allow for more alternative solutions to puzzles. I really hope that through sequels or DLC they continue to move in this direction. My specific example is
on the puzzle where you had to connect a path between the green and red boxes, I initially tried to draw my own path using the Sketch app and then opening my Sketch file in the image viewer. Ha that should have worked!
Felt so lucky to have stumbled across the demo just days before the full game dropped. Enjoyed this from beginning to end :) The puzzles are really creative and challenging. Story was engaging. Also loved the music a lot! Wish i could play it all over for the first time again
One of the best games I've played this year. This game has hit SO MANY of my itches it's insane. The music is incredible, the entire mystery-horrory-bit is so well done I felt like it was 2015 again. It's absolutely an astounding achievement.
简直是神作
Puzzle solutions that are not obvious even with hints and an answer that has no connection to the actual puzzle, solutions that are not made obvious is terrible game design. Was good up until the Anubis crocodile head room and then there is no connection for the right password to progress anywhere. Even the image giving the hint didn't even make sense. Literally 40 minutes into the game on top of completing the demo. 0/10 game, devs need to not have their heads up their own butts when making a puzzle game. Refunded.
Um incrível jogo de investigação e puzzle, e a vibe "pc antigo" é 10/10
音樂令人好開心 值得一玩~
