Deep Space is a small first person sci fi action game where I take control of an elite captain wearing a high tech mech suit and travel across hostile planets. The basic setup is pretty straightforward. I am sent out into space, exploring different areas, fighting dangerous enemies and trying to help save humanity from a larger threat. It has a very simple story and does not spend a huge amount of time building up its world, but I like the idea of being dropped into an alien environment and having to work my way through it. The shooting is the main reason I would play it. I get a proper first person perspective and spend most of my time moving through alien environments while dealing with enemies. There is also some exploration mixed into the combat, so I am not simply standing in one arena waiting for the next wave. The mech suit gives the game a slightly different feel from a normal human shooter, although the actual combat is still fairly basic. I can have some enjoyable moments when the enemies are coming at me from different directions and I have to keep moving instead of just firing from one safe position. I think the exploration is where Deep Space has some potential. The game takes me to different planets and tries to give each area a sense of being somewhere unfamiliar. I like looking around for a path forward and seeing what the next section has waiting for me. There is a small campaign rather than an endless multiplayer setup, which suits me because I can just focus on progressing through the adventure. The simple RPG elements also give me some extra progression, although they never become deep enough to completely change how I play. The biggest problem for me is how rough the whole experience feels. The environments and character models are quite basic, and there are plenty of moments where I can tell this was made on a much smaller budget. The combat can also feel awkward, especially when enemies crowd around me or when I am trying to move through tighter areas. I do not mind simple graphics in a small game, but I need the gameplay to feel especially smooth when the presentation is this limited. Deep Space does not always manage that. I also think the progression could have been much better. There are stats and equipment to work towards, but improving my character does not always give me the feeling that I have become dramatically stronger. A lot of the experience still comes down to walking around, shooting enemies and reaching the next area. Once I understand the basic loop, there are not many surprises left. I can enjoy it in short sessions, but I do not get the same feeling of discovery or progression that I get from the stronger action RPGs I have played. What saves it for me is that there is at least a complete little sci fi adventure underneath the rough presentation. I like the idea of exploring hostile planets in a mech suit, and there are moments where the simple shooting and exploration work well together. It is also a game that knows its own scale. I am not expecting a massive space epic from something this small, so I can appreciate the basic campaign for what it is. The problem is that the rough controls, limited depth and repetitive combat make it difficult for me to stay interested for very long. Overall, Deep Space is an okay small sci fi shooter that has a decent idea but does not have enough polish behind it. I like the mech suit, first person combat, alien environments and straightforward campaign, but the basic presentation and limited progression hold it back quite a bit. There are some enjoyable sections where the exploration and shooting come together, but I do not think there is enough variety or depth to make it stand out for me. It is worth a look if I specifically want a short and simple sci fi action game, but I would not put it among the stronger games in the genre. Rating: 6.5/10
