This is a slow-paced, challenging, fun take on first person survival horror games. Lots of backtracking to be had, resource management, a few not-too-difficult puzzles, and some amusing surprises too. I liked the ability to take my own notes on the map, but you can turn that option off. Additionally, there's a built-in randomizer, which is nice. Like other games of the genre, you have little supplies in the beginning, but will amass more ammo and more powerful guns as you continue. Bosses were a bit tough, but once you figure out their pattern, they should be beatable. I explored every room, and spent around 8 hours in the game. I'm sure some people will be turned off by the pacing, limited resources (meaning potentially loading earlier saves), and other qualities, but fans of the genre should give this a try. The story is about what you expect, but the game is clearly a loving homage to other titles, notably the original Resident Evil (1996) and Alone in the Dark (1992), and I have no complaints about that. Dead Beacon is only $5, which is criminally low for the amount of time it takes to beat the game alone.
For the price the game is remarkably well thought out. The level design of the island you're stuck on is great, unfolding more and more like a giant puzzle box, and just when you think you've mapped the whole thing, the game will ask you to recontextualize puzzle answers in a really interesting way. It's complex, until you've seen the whole place, and by the end you'll barely need to look at the map. And one of the most enjoyable parts is the mapping. The game will automatically fill rooms in, but everything else is up to you. You can draw and leave text notes, as well as put down custom pins. The game does a great job of having complex critical path objectives that strongly encourage you to use these features, and it's really engaging and forces you to take in your surroundings more. I'd hesitate to call this a particularly scary game, but the atmosphere is still suitably spooky, sort of like a toned down 70's Italian horror film. There's no weird tonal shifts but the tension of the game comes more from the mechanics. I'd recommend playing on the lowest difficulty first, because the game is pretty tough on Normal. You have to make really careful decisions about which enemies you take out. There IS enough resources to make it through, and the game is consistently rewarding when it comes to exploration. Several areas have items tucked away in really diabolical places, which often means backtracking is more rewarding since you're likely to find something you missed on a return to an area. I will say, the game's incredibly deliberate pace can take a bit to get used to. Walking forward partially is the only way to not move at a snail's pace, and reloading and firing most guns have long animations. The game is designed to compensate for this, but it's pretty slow. Maybe a speed upgrade of some sort would have alleviated some of the backtracking in the game's true ending route. It's really not deal breaking though. The game does an amazing job of using complex environment design to challenge the player in different ways. It really leans into the dungeon crawler element of old school survival horror, and even at full price, the game is worth a look.

I really wanted to like this game more than I ended up doing. Unfortunately some really awful design decisions held it back from being as good as it should have been. The main problem is that the mansion is at once too interconnected and not well defined for navigation. There are too many ways to end up in different areas that don't flow well. For example, once the central area of the Main Hall is available, you end up branching out on upwards of three different levels, doubling back on yourself multiple times, passing doors that are not marked, trying to remember which key went where. This was not helped by a truly awful map system where you mark notes down, only for the text to overlap onto different rooms and blend into walls. Add onto that that the mansion is too visually similar to itself in different areas, and building a mental map of the game becomes more trouble than it's worth. The statues of the Greek gods, which should be major landmarks, are all visually similar. They're all real life statues, rendered down, resting on red carpet with warm lighting and wooden floors. Then the developer buries an essential path to progression behind an honest to God merchant purchase halfway across the map and potentially hours later, and it's a miracle people figured out how to finish this game at all. Skip this game. If any of this looks appealing, play Nightmare of Decay instead. It's this game, but leaner, cleaner and prettier.
Dead Beacon was a SLOG to play through.. The melee requires charge up and does little damage, almost all the guns besides the magnum feel like you're blasting your enemy with NERF gun, your character slows down to a crawl every time they need to reload and still take forever to reload the gun. I have the mentality of someone who doesn't give up very easily. This game screwed me over not once, but twice.... The first time I didn't have enough ammo for the first boss, because I spent too much time over-exploring before fighting him. The game screwed me a second time on the third boss, as I didn't have enough rifle ammo to fight him, and the boss is a flying boss that never gets near enough for you to damage with a pistol/shotgun effectively. So having started this game over a 3rd time, having beaten the game, and gotten both endings B and A, I'm a little annoyed by quite a bit. First and foremost, the final boss is a joke compared to all the other bosses. Both endings are awful. Ending B is the bad ending which I get, but its not even a cut-scene, its literally a note you pick up and read. Ending A is supposed to be the good ending, but its not even really an ending. I've seen better endings to fairy tales made up by a 5-year old. To say that Dead Beacon is a bad game is an understatement. The game feels like it was in very early stages of development and then just released. Having played the excellent "Nightmare of Decay" first, Dead Beacon wasn't just a step down the stairs, it was a swift push down them followed by a disrespectful kick in the jewels.
This and Nightmare of Decay are what I would refer to as "RE7" likes. classic survival horror setup, but FPS perspective/combat great game go play it
Pretty solid
