Database Detective: Minor Crimes Division

Good difficulty progression, both in terms of the SQL and the detective work. First few cases are really simple, and the last few had a way more paths and data to dig through. The theme and humor is enjoyable. I had plenty of aha moments when figuring out the connections and how to relate different data sources together. It feels really rewarding when a series of SQL queries finally filters down thousands of rows across multiple tables to exactly one suspect. The UX felt cluttered and hard to manage at times, but it kind of ties into the feel of working in an old police station on a low budget PC. Would love to tackle more cases in the future! Hoping for mod support so we can make our own cases, or additional cases as add-ons.

This is a really fun game, and it has shown me how useful SQL can be in my work! I am a little frustrated with all the red herrings this game throws at you, especially in the last few chapters. It's also super annoying that the game doesn't save any of your lists when you accuse the wrong person, and you have to start from scratch. The lore-building in this game is super funny, though, and it really is an enjoyable game.

E: future me here. This game turned out to be harder than I initially thought, and SQL is just one of your handy tools. A large (even larger than writing queries) part of the game is information gathering and inference. You are scraping the internet for information that may or may not be useful, and sometimes need to establish the connection between two pieces of info with guessing. So in a sense it did lean a bit into the 'detective' genre, but that's fine by me. There's a university-related case which comes with course websites... Can't say these didn't resemble some of the real ones I've had to use lmao. The dark humor and the deadpan satire continue to play into the story which makes it more fun. ---- original review at ~1hr starts here ---- This has to be the most hilarious "programmer game" I’ve ever tried. I bought it expecting just SQL 101, which everyone knows just by looking at the store page. Yet I was genuinely amused by the silly (in a good way) story, and the totally off-the-wall, meme-y, and occasionally (frequently?) dark jokes scattered throughout. You can tell that genuine love and effort went into this game, and honestly I doubt an AI could have made these internet-meme-esque humor. This games feels like a refreshment among the "programmer game" genre for having a silly personality and so much flavor in its writing, instead of the “you are a hacker, now go hack this” setup that every game uses. I'll have to point out I do have prior SQL before playing this game, so this review might not apply to those that don't, and for that same reason I couldn't comment on how well this game teaches SQL to someone who's completely new. However, it's equally worth noting that this game feels fun to me for reasons not related to SQL. And So far it's been absolutely enjoyable. I might come back to add more but for now I don't see how future me might dislike it. Also, you can switch to WinXP default desktop wallpaper and Win10 default lockscreen wallpaper. 11/10 would accidentally click popup and upgrade to Win11

It started like a chill breeze and ended as a total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ … and you know what? ... I like it.

Put that I passed chapter 5 on my resume instead of my CS degree and finally landed that assistant entry level junior below minimum wage computer science job. 🙏
