A great game with interesting puzzles!
nice game
Dark Room is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The game is a static image adventure game where you tap on hotspots on your iPhone screen to manage your inventory and move from static scene to static scene, a bit like how adventure games used to be before Kings Quest. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features somewhat lazy, static 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in (get it? Because it's a mobile app???) like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the game was designed for, like having the resolution locked and so on. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game only ever reached a peak player count of only 11 players. That's right, only 11. This is a very poor showing, and worse, now the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is remarkable, but also to be expected. This complete and utter rejection of the game from gamers should be a keen information point for anyone considering buying shovelware like this. Gamers just didn't take this seriously, and for good reason. PC gamers don't like mobile apps. Dark Room is relatively cheap at $3 USD (similarly priced on the app stores), but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
I'm on the fence about recommending this game or not. The first puzzles were fine and not too challenging, the it got to the computer puzzle which made no sense. Then there was a picture slide puzzle (I HATE these with a passion). Then a puzzle that I had to lookup because the "help" was not helpful at all and I couldn't understand what they meant. Even after looking up the answer, I had no clue how anyone would solve that puzzle. I took me 2 hours to beat, mainly running around trying to find clues I thought I had missed for the office puzzle. Was it worth the $1 I spent with it on sale? Yes, but it was a frustrating experience with jump scares that fell flat.
