Cube Boy inherits his uncle’s house, only to discover that it is hiding a mysterious treasure and, unfortunately, a curse. The main objective is to explore the house, find several keys, and eventually unlock the final door hidden beneath it. The game plays like a classic point and click adventure, with the mouse cursor being your main tool for exploration. There is no button that reveals every possible interaction, so you have to carefully search each room and figure out what can be interacted with on your own. Your character’s position also matters, as you need to be close enough to certain objects before they become interactive. This means you cannot simply stand in one spot and scan the entire room. Interactive hotspots become outlined when you move the cursor over them. Movement is handled by clicking on the ground with the left mouse button, while moving between screens requires approaching an arrow and clicking on it. The left mouse button is also used for regular interactions. Each hotspot has a specific purpose, whether that means examining something, picking up an item, triggering something, or simply finding nothing useful. Once a hotspot has served its purpose, it becomes inactive. The inventory system is straightforward. Pressing the right mouse button brings up an inventory item in the upper right corner, and you can scroll through your collected items using the mouse wheel. The item currently displayed is considered active, allowing you to use it by clicking on the appropriate hotspot with the left mouse button. You can still interact with the environment normally while an item is active, which makes the system easy to use. The puzzles are a mix of item based solutions and logical challenges. Clues are hidden in the environment, mainly on walls, so they’re not hard. The puzzles are fair and do not require obscure knowledge, complicated actions, or looking outside the game for solutions. If you get stuck, certain rooms contain hint boxes. Before giving you the actual hint, these require you to solve a simple tile turning puzzle, which is a nice way of keeping the hint system interactive. The game takes roughly an hour and a half to complete, making it a relatively short but enjoyable adventure. None of the achievements are missable, and there is only one hidden achievement. Since you can return to the house even after completing the game, you can comfortably explore and clean up anything you may have missed.

Cube Boy is a point & click puzzle adventure set in a surreal black and white world where you’ll play music with a spider’s web string, boop a dog’s nose a [redacted] amount of times, play mahjong and whack-a-mole, and more, in order to solve some cleverly designed puzzles. All of the rooms are interconnected, so you’ll have to collect everything and remember the puzzle locations and their solutions once you find them. There are hints in each room, but they don’t give away the answer and instead make you think for it, which is very much appreciated. The game can take 1-2 hours to play through. Alien Tech/10.
