Feels like a downgrade compared to the other games the developer has made, which is a shame because the last Hexcells game was excellent and I enjoyed Squarecells as well. The first 30ish puzzles were fun to try, but after a certain point it felt more like trying to solve the whole thing at once and doing a guess and check of the whole grid for every scenario until you solve it, which doesn't really do it for me. Also wasn't a big fan of the design choices this time, specifically the lack of a reset button (unless I just missed it somewhere?) which only made things feel more tedious. I cleared the first 40 puzzles before it got too annoying and I just looked up a guide for 41-49 to be done with it, though I did clear the final puzzle on my own.

Not fun
good game
Not so good if you don't like maths, but for me this might be Brown's best Cells game. Not as difficult as SquareCells by a long shot, as the puzzles have no fail state (you don't get mistakes - you can click, undo, and click again as often as you please). Still challenging enough though, especially the bits where a row of squares has different totals at each end, so you need to consider order of operations. The game eases you into the bigger puzzles expertly, and there are enough of them to keep you occupied for several hours.
I was waiting to review this until I finished the game, but that's taking longer than I planned as it's rather a slog to get through. I love this dev's work on Hexcells and was hoping to enjoy this one just as much, but sadly it just hasn't clicked. Perhaps I am just missing something or don't have the vision, but every level in this game feels like pressing buttons with your fingers crossed hoping eventually you'll find the right combination. Yes, there are hints which should give you an idea how to solve the puzzle, but I found almost all of the hints have too many ways to solve them to the point I just have to guess and hope I picked right, undoing and redoing my work over and over until I find the correct way. I almost never have an "aha" moment where everything clicks into place, instead I just stumble into the right way after banging my head against a wall of 20 minutes. Now perhaps other people can look 25 moves in the future and keep all those numbers in their head, but I can't and found this game to be a practice in frustration and boredom. What might have helped me is a "locked in" state for blocks that you know have to be in an on or off state.
It's great, just like Hexcells!
