For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. Nothing makes me feel like a true red-blooded American like having a party member die and deciding the guy is just not important enough to justify the monetary costs of reviving. The lady at the temple goes "I'm sorry, I can't help people that don't have money." and it feels like I'm really there. Fortunately, after repeatedly stealing from every NPC in the game I now have enough money to do whatever the hell I want. This is also very American.
Wiz x FF Fusion 8-bit Dungeon Crawler -- Retro RPG Fun Through Job-Change Growth
An authentic 8-bit dungeon crawler RPG where you aim for the top of a mysterious tower that appears only once every 50 years. Set in the imperial capital of Mayirdoam, you set out as a nameless adventurer toward the summit, rumored to hold a wish-granting jewel and an elixir of immortality. The central narrative thread is the mystery of what awaits at the top, and the interplay of adventurers' hopes and ambitions gives the world a compelling drive to push forward. Pixel art faithfully recreating NES-era classic RPGs runs throughout the entire game -- from the characters and spell effects in side-view battle screens to the 2D top-down dungeon exploration maps, NPC portraits at the Adventurers' Guild, and event CGs -- all crafted with a polish that belies its solo-developer origins. The chiptune soundtrack deftly evokes both the tension of dungeon exploration and the thrill of adventure, blending seamlessly with the retro aesthetic. The highlight is the fusion of Wizardry-style dungeon exploration with a Final Fantasy-inspired job system. At the Adventurers' Guild you freely create characters from 3 races and 9 classes, with a system that carries over some learned skills when changing jobs. Train up a warrior's endurance before switching to a mage, or boost a thief's trap-disarming ability before respeccing into an attacker -- the possibilities are wide open. This skill-carry job change system greatly expands party-building freedom and the joy of experimentation. The dungeon spans 10 floors explored by lighting torches to expand your vision and gradually mapping your way forward. Pitfalls and assorted traps are scattered everywhere, lending a thrill to each cautious step. The addictive pull of "just one more room, just one more floor" is the very essence of the genre. Treasure chests and collectible items are sprinkled throughout, keeping exploration motivation running high. Turn-based combat is simple in structure yet shifts in strategic depth depending on your job composition and skill loadout. Modern QoL touches like adjustable battle speed and no permadeath are built in, making it approachable even for players wary of the genre's traditionally punishing nature. Difficulty does tick up in the later floors, but steady, patient leveling is enough to see you through. Playtime wraps up neatly at around ten-plus hours, with hidden artifact collection and full achievement completion offering further depth for completionists. Whether you feel nostalgia for Wizardry and early Final Fantasy or simply want an RPG where you can sink into job-based character growth, this is arguably a title worth recommending at its modest price point. HHF-chan's comment: "The skill-carry job changes are way too fun -- I just can't stop tinkering with party builds!"
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
I wanted to like this game. It's got cute art, great music, it's short and the gameplay is serviceable. Unfortunately it is too flawed, in too many important ways, to enjoy past the early stages. Crescent Tower is just that, a dungeon crawl through ten floors of the titular Crescent Tower. You start as a hero character, and your first goal is to obtain a Proof of Courage so that the Adventurer's Guild will recognize you and let you make a party. From there, you recruit a Beast and an Elf in the tower to introduce the game's main gimmick. I LOVE the idea of racial and class abilities aiding in progression, but they go absolutely overboard with them. Rather than allowing for bonuses or unique routes, they are simply progression blocks. You either have a Beast, an Elf and a thief, or you don't move through the game at all. This, alongside the fixed class hero character, makes party customization too restrictive and you end up just using all the base classes (with one of each race) and then transition over to the unlocked classes, which are just "Win more" type classes that are stronger in every way. The floors are also tiny, so the design room to have multiple routes and stuff is barely there. You map most of a floor within minutes of reaching it, through a tedious system where you use a torch and then a map item or spell every few spaces. The difficulty is mostly low, with absurd jumps due to flawed game mechanics. Enemies appear that do very dangerous things. Turn order (as well as ability success rate) is inconsistent, so your ability to counter those things is, in practice, very limited. Group of dragons? If your sleep or paralyze spell misses, or any of them go first, you're eating a lot of damage through no tactical fault of your own. It leads to the best strategy being to run from the things that are resource drains, and fight only the easier mobs. This is sufficient, but it isn't much fun. "Not much fun" sums up the game as a general.
This game is a fantastic mix of FF1 and Wizardry with a PC98 aesthetic. Love the artwork, but the more I played the game, and especially after finishing it, I cannot recommend this to anyone but hardcore enthusiasts. The highlight is probably the class system which allows you to carry over a tiny bit when switching your party member's jobs. Unfortunately, this is defeated by two things: power scaling and game length. On the harder difficulty, you can expect to reach the end at or before level 16, depending on how much grinding you manage to skip. Most jobs get their last ability at level 16, which means you can very much beat the game without ever job changing. Magic power ramps quickly, with new spells doing at least double the previous tier in damage as well as target groups instead of individuals. Exploration is a mixed bag with a lot of the secrets being nonsensical and have no hints. It comes down to locating a suspicious wall or spot on the map, and then trying various random things until you suddenly find yourself in that secret room. This is especially true on the first floor. The biggest hole in this game is the story; there really isn't one. Most of it will come in the form of texts that you read in the game's library. Your involvement in the story will feel very minimal until the second-last floor. Prior to that, your motivation is that this tower hasn't been conquered yet, "so let's beat it!" I won't give away the ending, but I will say not to get your hopes up. I can't decide if I am more angry-at or disappointed-with the game's ending. Some players are going to feel like they've been slapped in the face. Finally, if you're going for achievements, do yourself a favor and play on the easier difficulty as this doubles the drop rates. Normally you get 0-1 rewards from combat, and that includes gold. You can get skills to increase this to 2 rewards, and even attempt to steal a 3rd reward from combat. But when you need a specific drop from a rare encounter with a 1/128 drop rate that is then divided between 8 possible items, you will save dozens of hours by having that double drop rate. If you like old-school RPGs, with grind and esoterica BUT without story, this game could be for you.
Game is short and sweet. Mostly enjoyed it all until the end and it just felt too much but I also do not consider this game good. Game is set up to have party creativity but mishandles it due to how some of the underlying game mechanics are. I was money starved almost my entire playthrough because you can only get one stolen item per combat, one item per combat from everything's loot table in that encounter, and if you have the right abilities you increase the chance of loot as well as two items dropped per combat (use thief or suffer). There are class and racial abilites which sounds great for exploring but most are just there. Race of character also determines stats which sounds fantastic for min/maxing but the most important thing is that upon level up all stat gains are random. You can just have a bad level up. You could have a fantastic level up. You could see your HP go up by 1 for about 12 levels and see your wizard have less than a third of the other 4 people's HP when compared individually (she was designated party rug at this point). Knowing all this makes it worse because the four secret jobs are unlocked based on stats (the game tells you the requirements if you sit on the title screen long enough). The game is extremely Final Fantasy 1 with Final Fantasy 4's Row system but dungeon crawler. Turn order is randomized per turn because initiative values are always rerolled which I consider really bad. Late game devolved into mass enemy spam that could just end my party if enough of them got a turn because there is no magic defense stat. They all just have a minimum/maximum range and even with gear that grants 50% damage reduction the wearer will still melt into a puddle. Magic system is also very Final Fantasy 1 in that there are 8 levels of magic with 3 spells per category per level (27 spells in all) with each level having its own MP pool. Everyone can learn everything so there's no option weighing about what spells to take. The dungeon crawl of it all is kinda weird? All items cap at 9 in personal inventory, the shop only gets new stock from specifically the item you sell it because it essentially acts as storage so you have to purchase at an upcharge if you decided you DID want the item back, some items have a limited quantity in the shop so if it is sold out you have to get lucky with farmed drops. Reviving people with an abysmal money trickle is awful and I'm pretty sure that's why the 3 tutorial characters have an ability which lets them be revived for free. Reviving people also requires a catalyst which starts off extremely expensive and hard to get from drops but end game you are rolling in the Life Orb ball pit. The torch mechanic I wish was tweaked a bit more. It's something that feels more for a gimmick dungeon instead of being the main mechanic. Map system feels half baked because map does not fill UNLESS you use item, spell, or have the passive ability which requires some levels in the correct classes. Traps can be funny. Enemies don't feel balanced by the deadly synnergy that they could have but instead it turns into a damage race by seeing who can hit the most at once as hard as they can. How I feel about Crescent Tower is that it is very Final Fantasy 1 in a lot of the bad ways. I mostly had fun playing this game but I wouldn't recommend it.
I played this because I heard it was like Dungeon Antiqua, and I wanted more of that. I was not disappointed. It has a lot of really cool ideas. After 100%ing it, I can say I'd really like to see a second game that builds on everything this one did right. I really liked the exploration mechanics and would love to see those improved. I'd also like a more in depth combat system and maybe some generated treasure chests so there's a reason to go back and explore floors. The last several hours of gameplay (FOR COMPLETION) were just me standing in one spot spamming taunt to start fights, mowing down enemies with the samurai's slash to get the last drops to finish the item index. If you get the game, definitely start with a seeker and keep a thief throughout. Maybe don't bother trying to get to level 16 until you can easily clear fights on the 10th floor, but definitely not before you find the fortune ring. I really enjoyed it, and if you liked Dungeon Antiqua I & II, Scarmonde, or Wizardry, you might also find a lot of fun from Crescent Tower. Like I said: I'm looking forward to a sequel. I really hope it happens!
