At its core, its genius, and it looks like a lot of fun. I really wanted to enjoy this, and I spent about 2 hours trying to get into it, some of that was from the downloaded free version that has multiplayer. The problem is the game itself is not very easy to learn, and the controls are super clunky. Walking is a huge pain, aiming is a huge pain, doing anything is a huge pain. You are sometimes told what to do, but not how to do it, leaving me to look up other people playing because I didn't know how to extract whatever chip. summoning in 100 crabs and instantly blowing everything up was really funny the first time. (And I do mean everything, they just explode, and you likely lose)
pros: every time i see this game, i get transported back 10 years cons: everything else
Well, first, it's abandoned. Even a startup screen says "campaign is playable but unfinished". And that's after it came to steam, ~7 years ago, *after* it sat unfinished, in "independent web-space" for idk how long. As for actual gameplay... I just started but it seems to look more fun than it is. It's from a bygone era of games where devs expected you to actually *learn* their game, even if it looked so similar to other existing games which u already knew. Like, why does picking up a wep consist of clicking and holding a radial menu open, selecting "pick up item", instead of, y'know, just pressing a single key? Graphics are cool. But there are some completely avoidable choices made afa physics goes. I'm not saying they're wrong. Just, they don't feel great. "Barotrauma Syndrome", we might call it... It's on github if u wanna fix all this stuff yourself. Me? Not so much.
This game is extremely fun if you are willing to treat it like a sandbox. The game intends to be fun by digging for gold, pitching a brain against a brain and trying to defeat each other using the money from the gold, but the real reason its fun is the physics engine being unlike anything ever developed to this day. The closest to this type of design is Noita, and in a lot of ways Cortex Command gets more right. The Physics This game has a unique way of making a bullet feel like a genuine lead pellet hurling towards whoever it may be destined for. It may strike metal and cause oil and sparks to fly off, or plastic and cause the fairing to crack and fall off the machine. You might have a drop ship crash near you, and the carcass of it will nearly crush the body you poses at the time. The same bullet may strike the dirt, sinking in a few feet. This game feels like the original "Every pixel is simulated" The game play The game play is quite experimental. You'll find this game is unfinished and wants a lot more refinement in order to be something that anybody could pickup and play. In reality, the game is enjoyed but those who are willing to understand its mechanics first and then pitch themselves in the appropriate environment (Have a look at mods, its not fun DIGGING). The price The game is nearly something that should be free IMO. With that said this has given me more than 10 years enjoyment at this point so It would be stubborn of me to say that its not worth money The Game The game consists of You controlling many pawns with guns against on or more teams doing the same. The pawns are simple characters who would handle a gun and grenade and charge into battle. The are expendable meaning you aren't afraid of death and should encounter dangerous suicidal situations regularly. This makes for good chaotic times, but one that you should forcibly engineer to happen that the game naturally doesn't. Overall If you like physics engines, rag dolls, side by side shoot em ups and sandbox games, this game is PERFECT for you. PS. Pick skirmish, use the clone mod, use your favourite character +weapons, charge into the middle endlessly, This was the way the game was meant to be played (Take it from me, I have been playing this since 2010)

Хорошая игра, быстро проходится на 100%. Есть редактор уровней, что очень затягивает.

Cortex Command is a mod-able, sci-fi sandbox game where you build, fight, and strategize your way to surviving and completing the objectives and missions. Now the intro and tutorial is very effective at sending the story across, and teaching us how to play. I have no complaints on the controls, and the game play was overall smooth and bug-less. It's graphics are similar to other 2D side-scrolling physics and building games like Stellaris, Terraria, etc. with stunning sprites and lively visuals. Heck, even the gore is so detailed that I found myself walking over a field of blood and guts by the end of the mission. For Metagame, campaigns is 2-4 player versus, and you want to claim as much land on the map. It wasn't very difficult. The Wave defence mode is where the fun starts; destroy masses of enemies and defend your fort, which also often leads to the mountain of blood and guts on the land as previously mentioned. Unfortunately, the game hasn't received any update from the devs since 2019. It is now labelled an abandoned classic by many players who fondly remember this game, including myself. But regardless, I'd still vouch for Cortex Command.
Cortex Command has a lot of really interesting ideas. Its story is centered around transhumanism and the endless possibilities of space travel. It simulates damage to individual limbs, even allowing you to shoot the enemy's weapons right out of their hands. Bases can be hand built with modular pieces, dropped in from orbit, ordered mid-mission, into destructible terrain. And on top of all of that, everybody's got a jet pack! There's pretty much nothing about the pitch of this game that I don't want in on. The issue is that it was never finished. You can feel the lack of end-user polish in everything you do. There's no storied campaign to explore that fascinating, star hopping set up. There's nothing I found past the not-always-obvious visual indicators that a unit isn't functioning correctly, leaving me clueless surprisingly often as to why they weren't firing or walking anymore. The free base building didn't quite seem to line up with the exciting ability to burrow into the planet itself in any reasonable way. You couldn't direct units to dig or explore during the dedicated building phase and the enemy pressure, even on the gentlest difficulties, ensured there was no time to fiddle around with construction during battles. Every single attempt to explore a level made me feel like a newborn giraffe in molasses. I have full confidence people out there have mastered the movement, overcome the obtuse UI, and broken through to what this game seems like it could be. But I couldn't find a good reason to put in the hours and effort needed to get to that point, not while every little thing I did do felt so unsatisfying.
