Breakout is a simple, yet addictive game that's fun to play. Breakout Epilepsia is one of those, but it's neither addictive, nor fun to play. The core mechanic that makes Breakout good, is gone entirely. The ball bounces off your paddle at the same angle as it bounces on, there is no way for you to control the trajectory of the ball yourself in any meaningful way, like flicking the paddle as the ball bounces or hitting the ball with the edge of your paddle - In fact, trying to hit the ball with the edge of your paddle will quite often cause the ball to phase right through the corner. Once only a few blocks remain, there is nothing for you to do but wait until the ball eventually hits the last blocks - no way for you to try and aim for it. Visual art is alright, music and sound are mediocre but inoffensive
I got up to the final boss, but was having difficulty with it especially it's second stage sword attack, couldn't manage to dodge it. I quit and when I came back the main screen was was different and all my progress was gone. Very disheartening. I played through to the last brickbreaking level again but stopped there. The ball physics feel all off, I can't judge where the ball will bounce and the brick you use to bounce the ball seems to swing wildly between slugish and speedy (though I am using a pretty cheap keyboard it has never been a problem with any other game). A single tap seems to move you anywhere from a few pixels to a quater of the screen making, additionally sometimes the ball will just fall through the brick you are trying to move in place as if the hitbox is trailing behind it. From some of the developer's other comments it seems they added the brick break levels as filler between the boss battles, but I would recommend not adding things to pad out the game, it won't have your love in those parts and you can tell. The boss battles are interesting, it's clear they got a lot of focus put on them and it mostly pays off. If anyone asked me what I thought of the game I couldn't recommend it, but I hope the developer keeps at it and is enjoying making their next game.
A short game and a bare-bones experience, but well crafted. The game alternates between Breakout/Arkanoid style stages and shoot 'em up boss fights, with variations in both the regular stages and the boss fights to keep things feeling fresh throughout the story mode. There isn't much of a story to speak of, but thanks to that the short conversations scattered between levels don't overstay their welcome. Solid level design throughout, including in the procedurally generated "infinite mode" that keeps the experience going after the end of the normal levels. Short and sweet, and for the unbeatable price of "free," it won't change your life, but it won't bore you during its run. ...Maybe don't play it if you actually have photosensitive epilepsy, though. The background repeatedly flashes black and white more or less constantly.
Went in not expecting much and I ended up really liking it. I feel like there's a ton of potential here and it's obvious that a lot of passion went into making this. It's clear that a lot of heart went into making this. Aesthetically, it kind of reminds me of those surreal, experimental flash games that you would find on Newgrounds back in the mid 2000's. I really miss those types of games, so this is exactly the type of thing that I have been craving ever since flash died. Honestly my biggest complaint is that it left me wanting more. The final boss was the obvious highlight of the game for me. The music, gameplay and visuals on display there were all phenomenal. There was a really great feeling of tension that built up over the course of the fight, and the amount of health the boss had felt intimidating without being tedious. The rest of the game wasn't bad by any means, but that final level really impressed me. Also the black, white and red color palette looked the best IMO. The story is quite basic and that's to be expected for a game that's less than an hour long, but I really liked the themes and aesthetics going on. I think there's an interesting story being developed and hopefully it's able to be fully realized at some point. The main character kind of gave me Samus vibes, I liked that. The game could definitely benefit from some better translation at some point, some of the dialogue didn't fully land for me. The art was surprisingly tasteful ngl. Yes it's a little freaky but that's not an inherently bad thing. Like the characters are scantily clothed but they also have fairly realistic proportions and diverse body types that aren't just 'skinny with huge tits'. As a woman who plays video video games and can appreciate the female form, I respect the ♥♥♥♥ out of that. I do think the ball physics were the weakest point of the game. It doesn't ruin the game or anything but I think giving the player more control over the ball would make the game more enjoyable. Also I found the music looping every time you die to be kind of annoying, especially considering the music is actually very good when it gets the chance to play for longer then 10 seconds at a time. Overall, really cool project and I'm very interested in seeing more from you guys. Gaming has been so overwhelmingly dominated by men since its inception that finding cool projects like this made by women makes me feel really hopeful.
