With sweet treats comes sweet romance. ^^

Introduction
Bread Makes the Heart Aflutter is a free-to-play yaoi, fantasy, slice-of-life visual novel developed and published by solarProtag. You're Emile Mayer, the owner of a bakery called A Slice of Life, which is nestled in the human kingdom of Selias. As Emile is going about his daily routine, he hears news from his fairy friends, Azalea, Snowdrop, and Magnolia, about the royal procession from the Fae Kingdom visiting Selias. Even though this news is interesting, it doesn't involve Emile, as he's making freshly baked sweet and bringing smiles to customers' faces. However, one night, a mysterious fae enters Emile's bakery, and events start to shake up for Emile. :o https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3793224166 As for the gameplay, two routes are available that Emile can go on although they can be done in any order and they're mandatory to complete. Then a third hidden route is unlocked, which involves the budding romance between Emile and the mysterious fae, Damon. As there is one ending, the story is linear. Plenty of CGs and a varied soundtrack are present as well as a few Steam achievements, but achievements won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game".
Review
Being one of the participants in the Fall in Love Visual Novel Festival, I'm excited to help showcase one of the VNs here, and yup, it's Bread Makes the Heart Aflutter. Having enjoyed The Mysterious Thief; Forget Me Not (please check out my review of it here), I was ecstatic to get a preview of solarProtag's newest VN. ^^
Story and Gameplay
The story briefly introduces us to Emile and A Slice of Life, putting the reader into a warm, comforting atmosphere for what's to come. Then we get the choice between two routes: Donut Holes and Mille Feuille. While Donut Holes narrates events that are going on between Emile and the fae, particularly with Damon, Mille Feuille narrates Emile's interactions with the royals in Selias, particularly with Prince Zeke. I like that we get immersed with both humans and fae, and I was especially interested in learning how Emile was initially introduced to the fae. That initial meeting is quite sweet. Now, to unlock the romance route, you have to read both of the above routes, which is a good idea since it gives you background for what's to happen. As for the romance, it is between Emile and Damon. I like how they grow closer over time, with Damon visiting the bakery more often and feeling more open and at ease. Of course, there's a secret that Damon is hiding from Emile, but Emile does figure it out before things get a bit out of hand with the story's climax. Also, I like how there's some jealousy from Prince Zeke, as he has a crush on Emile, but Emile keeps gently rejecting him. There are plenty of cute, sweet moments and yup, Emile and Damon share a kiss or two. XD After the main story, if you purchase the DLC, you'll get an after story in which Emile attends his first ball with Damon, and yup, there are even more cute, sweet moments and kissing. The romance is limited to kissing, some flirting and touching. With the gameplay, I like that you can choose which route to read. Of course, you have to end up reading both routes, but they feel like you're on a relaxing journey. The writing is well paced, and I only noticed one very minor typo, which didn't stop me from enjoying the story. All achievements unlocked for me without any issues.
Art and Music
The art style is lovely to look at. The sprites are cute, especially the fairy ones. The backgrounds are on the simpler side, but they're drawn well enough that you can tell where Emile and the others are. Especially, the CGs are done well, and I like how you can view all of them after you finish the main story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3793224260 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3793224385 In regards to the music, the tracks are relaxing and soothing, perfect for a slowburn, slice-of-life VN. They're all instrumental, and the tracks fit well in their respective scenes. Also, they're perfect for a VN that's in a fantasy setting. XD
Conclusion
Would I recommend Bread Makes the Heart Aflutter? If you're looking for a sweet, warm, fantasy visual novel with yaoi romance, you'd like a short story to read, and/or you enjoy getting Steam achievements, then it's totally worth a try. The base game is free, and if you like the main story and want more, you can purchase the DLC for more story and to help support a great developer. Finally, I'd like to thank solarProtag for the review copy. The romance between Emile and Damon is cute and sweet (guess I've said that many times although it's true lol), and I like the various NPCs that help to support them as well. ^^
For more detailed, fully complete, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
BECAUSE BREAD TASTES BETTER THAN KEY!
solarPortag added a redhead literally just for me and I love him. Anyways, I'd die for Emile. Damon's pretty good, too, but that Emile kid's on a whole 'nother level.
boys kissing was advertised and i got it
The fae king is such a pushover 😭
It's really sweet! Emile is smart enough to spare us the "wait, what? could he be..." lines; we know, he knows (immediately and implicitly), we know he knows, no need to dwell on it. Same with Emile's backstory. Thank you for not spelling everything out for us.
I love the kiss! It's not "awkward at first", it's "we take time to find our rhythm" which feels so much more romantic!
I'll also mention the art, specifically the attention to details because I really like Undine's dress and the fairies' petals reflecting their names is sweet. I'm not a big fan of the routes menu, because you just pick one blindly and order doesn't matter, so it doesn't add anything to the stories, but it also didn't bother me (the mille-feuille route does end very abrupty though). (1 hour was enough to read through the whole game, and it was the perfect length.)
Bread I only played one route, and it did feel shorter than what I had anticipated. Still a very sweet game! The characters are cute, and Emile is an adorable protagonist. I'll recommend for anyone who wants to play a wholesome BL game.
it's full of cute and silly moments, but also has a compelling storyline with many heartwarming scenes. the art is really pretty and the characters are absolutely adorable

So cute!!! Its more a story than a game but OMG I enjoyed it so much! The story is so cute and the art is absolutely beautiful. Will definitely play again.
was browsing free steam games and this one caught my eye for its lovely art style, and I'd say it's a pretty solid visual novel. personally I would've loved to see more choices and conflicts (or maybe there's more of that in the dlc, i haven't played it yet) and tbh i think a zekehart route would be pretty cool, but i understand if that's undoable. the controls are very intuitive, which I really didn't think I'd be saying about a visual novel, but my reading comprehension kinda sucks so its nice to scroll back and reread stuff (or if something funny happens and i wanna see 'em do it again xD). short, but nice. if you're reading this review before you play, do the doughnut hole route first trust me
