Insanely fun fangame with a 10/10 soundtrack, a really cool story, great character designs, very fun and well-designed patterns, and a super forgiving and enjoyable gimmick in the form of Power Overwhelming. Hollow Song of Birds is the only other fangame I've played comparable in enjoyment to this MASTERPIECE. 100/10
This game has some really strong high points. The final boss mechanics are really clever and a lot of fun to figure out, the system mechanics are also quite fun. Thinking of the final boss it seems that more could have been done with the stages and the system mechanics, as a lot of the stages and dankamu just feel very basic or samey, but that seems to be a common theme in Touhou inspired games. But as I said, the high points of the game are really good so I think it is worth recommending to danmaku fans, especially those who like Touhou shmups. As a added note, the game has big performance issues on Linux by default. In order to fix it you need to disable DXVK by launching the game with PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% launch command. Then the framerate is stable but the loading screens take a long time for some reason.

Shooter shaped, but not a good shooter. The first several levels are a total snooze, and then midway through, it alternates between snoozes and sudden wakeups out of nowhere. I don't feel like a single death was something that I could or should have seen coming, just pure, "don't have been anywhere near there when a totally un-telegraphed attack was going to instantly zap you". It has a very basic grasp of the idea that in this type of game, there should be loads of bullets, and slowdown, but the slowdowns are never actually related to difficult patterns you have to navigate. It just seems like the engine failing to cope with something totally unrelated to the shooter part, and then a curved, pulsating pattern warps in at lightspeed sideways 5 seconds later.
别开240帧!!!!!!!! 被难到怀疑人生才想到可能是帧数问题。
Very funny and hard too, love it
东方栖霞园 ~ Blue devil in the Belvedere is a Touhou-inspired bullet-hell shooter that confidently positions itself as both a loving homage and a distinct creative work within the vast ecosystem of Touhou fan games. Developed and published by 东方祈华梦制作组, with 东游鉴 handling distribution, the game immediately establishes a sense of mystery through its premise: strange red eyes appear across the land, sacred locations are violated, and an unfamiliar wave of demonic influence begins to seep into the familiar world surrounding the Scarlet Devil Mansion. This narrative framing feels respectful of Touhou’s loose, suggestion-driven storytelling while still giving players a clear sense of purpose, allowing curiosity rather than exposition to propel the experience forward. At its core, the gameplay embraces the classic danmaku formula that Touhou fans expect, focusing heavily on dense projectile patterns, precise movement, and the constant tension between aggression and survival. Enemy waves and boss encounters are designed to push spatial awareness to its limits, forcing players to read patterns quickly and commit to narrow openings with confidence. What makes the experience particularly engaging is how readable the chaos remains; despite the sheer volume of bullets on screen, patterns are thoughtfully structured, rewarding learning and memorization rather than pure reflex alone. This balance makes the game approachable for less experienced players while still offering substantial depth for veterans seeking mastery and optimization. As players progress, the game gradually expands on its mechanics in subtle but meaningful ways. Different characters and shot types introduce variations in playstyle, encouraging experimentation and repeated runs. Rather than overwhelming the player with complex subsystems, the design emphasizes refinement—small changes in positioning, timing, and route choice can dramatically alter outcomes. Boss fights, in particular, stand out as highlights, each structured around distinct spell card patterns that feel theatrical and thematically appropriate. These encounters capture the signature Touhou rhythm of tension and release, where moments of overwhelming pressure are followed by brief windows of clarity and triumph. Visually, 东方栖霞园 strikes an effective balance between clarity and atmosphere. Character sprites are expressive and faithful to the broader Touhou aesthetic, while environments and effects lean into darker, gothic tones that suit the game’s demonic themes. Spell card visuals are especially striking, combining color, motion, and symmetry in ways that feel both intimidating and elegant. Importantly, the visual design never sacrifices gameplay readability for spectacle; bullets, hitboxes, and enemy tells remain clear even during the most visually intense moments, underscoring the developers’ understanding of what makes a bullet-hell shooter satisfying rather than frustrating. The audio design further reinforces the game’s identity, with a soundtrack that alternates between ominous, restrained melodies and energetic, driving compositions during boss encounters. Music plays a crucial role in maintaining momentum, amplifying the emotional stakes of difficult fights and lending weight to narrative moments without relying on dialogue. Sound effects are crisp and functional, providing essential feedback for player actions and enemy attacks, which is especially important in a genre where split-second reactions can determine success or failure. In terms of overall presentation and support, the game demonstrates a level of polish that sets it apart from many smaller fangame projects. Multiple language options, achievement support, and stable performance contribute to a sense that this is a thoughtfully prepared release rather than a rough experimental build. Community reception reflects this care, with players frequently praising the game’s balance, aesthetic cohesion, and respect for Touhou traditions while still acknowledging its willingness to explore darker thematic territory. Taken as a whole, 东方栖霞园 ~ Blue devil in the Belvedere is a compelling entry in the Touhou fangame landscape, offering a focused, rewarding bullet-hell experience that understands both the strengths and expectations of the genre. It succeeds not by reinventing danmaku fundamentals, but by refining them through strong encounter design, evocative presentation, and a cohesive atmosphere. For fans of Touhou shooters and players seeking a challenging yet fair indie STG, it stands as a memorable and worthwhile experience that rewards dedication, practice, and an appreciation for beautifully controlled chaos.
