Black Mesa

What a great game. It's a stellar example of a remake done right, it sticks to the formula of the original while inserting new, but fitting ideas into the game and gives it a modern coat of paint. Similar to the original Half-Life, it's very well paced, combat and puzzles are smooth and satisfying. The story and plot are very intriguing, while respecting the player's time. The visuals and setpieces are a treat to look at and explore and I didn't feel I got snagged anywhere for too long, it's quite good at telling you where to go. I've heard people say Xen is too stretched out but I really enjoyed the environment that clearly had a lot of love put into it, especially as a fan of speculative alien life. I love every side of the incident being shown in a humanizing light. The poor Black Mesa crew barely makes it out alive and are the only people in the facility who want to help you, so you're inclined to do likewise. The Marines either don't know the full extent of their mission or are genuinely enjoying the killing, but their desperation and pleas for help when retreating after the alien invasion invite some sympathy. Even the Vortiguants, who are shown to have a unique culture similar to ours in Xen, are shown to be just slaves to the Nihilanth.
