It was considered the best Bioshock game back in 2013, as the years have gone on people have realized that’s not the case. The game looks nice but I’d say thats only the only thing it has on the other 2, there are so many ideas that the game sets up that never get used again such as the order of the raven and Comstock house. It’s story is all over the place trying to blend multiple plot lines together and getting something worse, characters are inconsistent the say one thing one minute then the exact opposite the next. I feel if this hadn’t been a Bioshock game it would have been better but unfortunately that’s not what we got, but hey at least it’s not as bad as it’s DLC.
It's a game but don't expect any high quality writing or classic philosophies from classical literature. This game was a epitaph of what modern gaming would soon become. A story that makes white people look bad. Your abilities become more annoying to use than they were in Bioshock 1 and 2 and they become more used up than in previous games. I am not over-exaggerating, especially on higher difficulties you will use an ability once or twice and will have to refuel. This game is more annoying than entertaining. I am not going to hide spoilers here, but you are unknowingly the bad guy and group of Elizabeths kills you in the end, it has one of the worst endings in any game 2K has ever published. It makes you wonder why you played such a long campaign only for you to die at the end. No, there is no new game plus like the other Bioshock games had. This game might look nice as far as graphics but in my opinion is what killed the franchise. Also, in my opinion this game doesn't feel like Bioshock at all. The game isn't creepy at all and is too colorful.
BioShock Infinite
Okay, first I wanted only to replay BioShock 1 & 2. In the end I thought I would give Infinite another try because I remembered not really liking it. First, I am really hard to get with stories about time travel/multiverse things. For me the story doesn't work. What makes it worse is if you expect more BioShock, it just feels like less. Especially, you can only carry 2 guns at a time. Different ammunitions were broken off to different weapons with their own, which made upgrading any weapons feel like a gamble. The only way most times was changing weapons out and hoping to find soon a new one again or buying ammo constantly. Health and Eve/Salts kits are not there anymore instantly you get an auto-rechargeable shield. It feels more like a "modern shooter" where health recharges if you hide long enough. Health Eve/Salts can only be recharged through scavenging or buying at a vending machine. Multiple passives were replaced with 4 gear slots, and every slot has a few things to choose from, but many feel too situational, so you need to change them around often if you want to really use them because they are bound to a category. Manual saves were replaced with auto saves (checkpoints), which I can't stand. All in all if you come from BioShock 1 & 2, this falls flat, just like a try to modernize and streamline the gameplay. If I am honest, if this game had not tried to combine Rapture and Columbia's universes, it would have felt better. Or to say it like this, they could have just made the game about Columbia. A fresh new game with some mechanics the players know but in a new universe instead of trying to pull them together so people don't expect too much, well, from what they know from the games before. If it were its own thing, I would have probably been more generous. So for me, I can't really give a thumbs up; I would like to give something like a thumb to the side, but we don't have that, and that means for me it will be a thumbs down. If the games were separate from each other, it would look different, but if someone asked me that liked BioShock 1 & 2 especially for their gameplay, I would say, don't play it. BioShock 1 & 2 work on their own story-wise. But if you like the Multiverse theme, well, try it as long as you don't expect the gameplay from 1 & 2.
Bioshock Infinite is a game that, during a first playthrough, seems actually kinda good. A beautiful world in the sky, exploring a setting steeped in racial conflict and historical revisionism while going through alternate realities during it, using similar gunplay and powers like the first two Bioshock games. But then you try a second playthrough, maybe a third, and the cracks begin to show. For all the major topics it wants to discuss it wants to act as deep as the ocean, but really is as shallow as a puddle. Infinite keeps tackling so many subjects that end up muddling the whole thing, causing it to lose focus and either says nothing significant or seemingly messes up even as basic an idea as "racism bad". The multiverse idea also is messy, jumping around so much that whatever other topics get muddled whether you should care for this being your world, a possible future or is even going to happen. For a game hammering down this idea of choices and variables, it also feels like your choices matter even less now than previous games. The gameplay itself is not much different. Rather than a high selection of weapons you can choose from and upgrade, you have to pick up what enemies drop and hope it's the stuff you upgraded throughout the game. Same for the Vigors, reducing it down to 8 with the rest being this weird equipment passives system that isn't even really explained. Compared to the dozens of choices the original games gave you, it feels like a downgrade. Not helped that everything relies on money you dropped during the game, including reviving yourself. Which means that if you die a lot you lock yourself out of certain upgrades later down the line. Overall the game is okay but does not hold itself up well compared to the first two games. Go play those instead of this one.
Fully beat this game on my PS3 back in the day, and still remember it fondly. This was my favorite Bioshock out of all of them, and it has a phemomal story and setting. Definitely still worth playing all these years later. I do hope we'll get another Bioshock game someday.
The biggest piece of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever conceived by human hands, a franchise-killer in everything but name, peddled by glazers whose first BioShock was this game and couldn't even mentally grasp a game that doesn't routinely give you glowing trails, ammo refills even on the hardest difficulty and salts+heals if you so much as lose a smidgen of your gauge. Now, don't let my playtime deceive you. I have completed this game to 100% on the PS4 PROOF So why do I have this game on Steam? The geniuses over at 2k package it with BioShock 1 and 2 remastered, so you can't get the "collection" of the only two worthwhile games in the series without buying this miserable placenta discharge of a game. I hate BioShock Infinite. It is the antithesis of fun, its "smart" writing is just the ramblings of a subversive hack who tore his own series apart out of spite. I hate the gameplay and its arbitrary limitations, forced handholding even on 1999 mode, and its utter refusal to let you explore the admittedly gorgeous vistas of Columbia without Elizabeth or one of the Vox reeee-ing in your ear to progress through the linear path. The damage this game and its DLCs did to the BioShock IP cannot be overstated. Burial at Sea is a retcon-filled spiteful vomit of gameplay that just HAS to insert Elizabeth and Booker into the infinitely (lol) more interesting setting of Rapture and its events. Class warfare, plasmids causing drug-fueled rages, the body horror of the big daddies -- Elizabeth is now intrinsically tied to it all, and the violation of BIO 1 & 2 doesn't end there. This is a game for midwits, the kind of people who would drool on their controllers else they be reminded to close their mouths. The difficulty is as absent as Ken Levine's father clearly was growing up, the level design is two generations behind what BioShock 1 and 2 so superbly established, and the story is the tale of a cosmic multiversal Mary-Sue who has such rampant daddy issues she'd make Luke Skywalker blush, going so far as to kill Booker DeWitt in every timeline just because "he always becomes Cumsock". Yeah, I spoiled the twist here, and I saved you money too hopefully. Do not buy or play this miserable, steaming pile of excrement. Vigors are terrible and a needlessly inferior and cumbersome take on plasmids, and limiting you to two weapons to enforce some kind of familiarity with your favoured armament just leads to you maining the sniper which Elizabeth will toss you ammo for whenever you're low even on 1999 mode. Couple these two massive downgrades of combat tools with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, woeful boss fights, some of which are just palette swaps between one faction and the other and you have a recipe for some of the most monotonous FPS gunplay you'll ever be subjected to. A COD campaign is more inventive than the gameplay loop of this queef. I hate Hollow Knight and Undertale, but you know what? The only saving grace I can afford them is they aren't this franchise-ending slop. There's a reason BioShock 4 has been in development Hell for almost 13 years now, and it's not because the "interns" (IYKYK) hired by 2k don't know how to code. It's because narratively, what kind of stakes are there to even care about in le epic multiverse, and even if you could somehow scrounge something together, what do we even do with Columbia destroyed and Rapture so far sunken into the Mariana trench by retcons and lore violation, that revisiting it now would just leave one asking: what's the point? Literally what is the point of this f*cking game but to drive a knife into the beautiful world of Rapture, twist it, and spit STD-ridden salt into the gaping hole left behind. 0/10. Unironically.
